Greetings!
As most boats were being hauled the first weekend of November, Oakcliff had 102 people on the water! The 70 degree weather helped, but most had registered long in advance for the Halloween Invitational Grade 3 Regatta. We had sailors fly in from Mexico, Canada and several teams from the Midwest. Added to the fun in the sun was a solid fleet of Shield sailors racing in Hunt's fleet race.
While much of sailing journalism these days is dedicated to the dwindling numbers of young sailors, we are witnessing a growing interest in match racing among college students. I could hardly believe my ears when competitors wanted to cut the party short Sunday to do homework!

| Frost Biting Here and Away |
Even with the snow falling, Oakcliff will have fleet racing on Saturdays until we all decide it is just too cold. To participate show up at OBMC at 12:30. Note that we have a rather unscientific stop-date so you are welcome to confirm on Friday by calling 516 802 0368 or emailing race@oakcliffsailing.org
Over on Centre Island, Seawanhaka will host team racing on Saturdays and for the even more adventurous, fleet racing in the very low-to-the-water, Lasers on Sundays. For more information contact Bam Miller: teamracing@seawanhaka.org

SapGrads Return for Halloween Regatta
|
Balmy and windy conditions transitioned to mild and shifty, and finally on the last day became a chilling, blustery Northwesterly at the Oakcliff Invitational. The best teams showed their ability to adapt to the changing weather.
The regatta was won by Chris Poole who sailed with Oakcliff SapGrads-Chris Kennedy, Solomon Krevans, John Colburn, plus his sister Holly. Poole is currently ranked #2 in the U.S. Open Match Racing Division.
Max St. Maurice, a SapGrad who now runs his own training center in Mexico, the International Sailing Academy, raced with the Canadian team led by Lance Fraser and placed second. SapGrads made appearances on half of the boats competing! Sunday night's party felt as much like a reunion as an awards ceremony.
Oakcliff Supporters were also represented by Doug Shannon's team. This past weekend Doug won the Grade 5 Regatta undefeated! Click HERE to read more! For the Halloween Regatta press releases visit: SapGrads Arrive! and Poole Spooky Fast

Manhasset Bay Fall Series was big for Oakcliff. The Ker 11.3 not only won their class they also won the Ted Clark Trophy for best overall performance in PHRF.
Headed up to the podium we realized we were epitomizing the diversity that Oakcliff intrinsically creates. Open to anyone with a desire to take advantage of coaching each and every time they are on the water, Oakcliff becomes less intimidating as it is a true team atmosphere. We might get super intense but it is as a team. The winning - well that is a bonus.

Oakcliff Heads South to St. Thomas
| Oakcliff will be well represented at this year's Carlos Aguilar Match Race, November 21-24, 2013. Our own Dave Perry will be competing and is a veteran match racer who literally wrote the book on the rules of racing. He is the designer of Oakcliff's Clinegatta, a combination clinic and regatta aimed at raising the level of sailing in the US.
Giving Perry some stiff competition will be the hot new breed of match racers like Chris Poole. On board with Poole will be 2 SapGrads, Chris Kennedy and John Colburn. Not to be left out, Sharon Bernd, Oakcliff's bookkeeper and often volunteer race officer is headed down to do race committee. We are looking forward to seeing great results from Oakcliff sailors and we might be a tiny bit jealous that they have all managed to head South to the warmth of the USVI. | Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Oakcliff!
Sincerely,

| Jeff MacFarlane On His Way Home | | We've been holding our breath for Jeff as he worked against the clock trying to rejoin the MiniTransat Race. It seemed the most recent start delay imposed by the organizers, was the gift he needed while he searched for a means to retrieve the dismasted boat he was forced to abandon.
Sadly, once the boat had been found it was swamped and the electronics were fatally damaged. Additionally, a new mast had not yet been located.
Jeff calculated that even if he got everything fixed and started late, he would be a week behind and for this reason has chosen to abandon the race.
The boat has been returned to Lorient and he just reported he is on a layover in Iceland and on his way home to New York.
This winter Jeff will be speaking at Oakcliff to tell us in his own words the story we've all been following. Stay tuned for the date!
