Oakcliff International: Racing Underway
Follow Racing OnLine
September 4 2013
The Oakcliff International, the finale of the Grand Slam Series begins today.  The teams are taking this serious and pulling in all of the rock stars to strengthen their teams.  Oakcliff's Dave Perry will jump onboard with Chris Poole who has been living in Oyster Bay and training at Oakcliff all summer.  Oakcliff team members, Mike Komar and Jay Kehoe will be adding heavy weight strength to David Storrs's already strong team.  This is perhaps the toughest field we have seen at Oakcliff.

While the locals will be staring down the international teams, the classics will also have a busy week.  The final summer series race is tonight followed by the awards party.  The Pizza Truck is once again coming down from Greenport and modern and classic sailors will celebrate together.

Read on to see how far and wide the Oakcliff message is reaching and how to follow the racing and don't forget to sign up for the Fall Series.

US Sailing & Oakcliff  -All Over the Press!
Grand Opening Rope Cutting Oakcliff's Grand Opening was widely covered on Channel 12 as well as local papers.  We expect quite a few articles in monthly magazines too.  As a member of the Oyster Bay East Norwich Chamber of Commerce said yesterday morning.  "Oakcliff has made Oyster Bay international!"  It is exciting how much is going on and we expect that it will just keep growing.  In the meantime here are some links to some great videos and photos of the day.

The Oakcliff message has spread to Europe too.  It was exciting to be introduced to new sailors and owners as Dawn Riley who runs an amazing place in New York called Oakcliff.  Not one person called it Oak Leaf!

This all happened last week as I was in Porto Cervo, Italy racing on a 56 meter Perini Navi yacht called Silencio.  If you buy me a drink I'll give you all of the details but here are a few fun facts:

It takes almost a whole skein of yarn to wool one of the spinnakers.

The B&G's didn't work because of a faulty mast cable. Sapling Chris Smith re-spliced the top end fitting at sea on the Ker 50 that was scary because of the sea state. Silancio crew Shamus did it at the dock, obviously a more stable situation but then again he was  148 feet in the air!

We race with 40 crew and it takes ALL hands to take the spinnaker down.

We needed 80 sandwiches each day ... and yes I helped make them.

The walk to the boat in the morning was indeed beautiful.

We had a female tactician, navigator and primary trimmer added to a really wonderful owner, family and permanent crew that kept the boat together, fast and fun.

Oh - and - We won!  :-)

It is now day 25 of my personal 43 days of chaos. I am headed out to umpire the Oakcliff International for one day and tomorrow I'll be jetting out to San Francisco to do VIP commentary for the America's Cup. That should be interesting!

I hope to see many of you tonight at the pizza party or on the road or on a plane or on a boat. Oakcliff is tumbling into the  fall season and we hope you'll jump on for the ride.

Sincerely,

Dawn Riley
