Oakcliff Sailing Center
It's Official - The Beach is Open!
Spectator Spots Available
August 24 2013

What a party it was!  "The Beach" aka Oakcliff's US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider Training Center is officially open.  Thursday saw dignitaries such as State Senator Carl Marcellino  and Mayor Larry Schmidlapp attend the ribbon cutting.  The skies cleared and all boats headed out for a lovely sail and returned to Oakcliff for a "bit" of a party.  All proceeds of the party went to support the Olympic Skiffs and Cats so thank you for that support.

This is a super media rich newsletter so sit back, scroll down and enjoy.

Acorns Win Offshore Youth Challenge

The Farr 47 filled to the brim with Saplings and Acorns chalked up another victory in the Ida Lewis Distance Race.   It was the first offshore for the second session Acorns and the last offshore race for many Saplings. Most of the Saplings jumped over to the Farr 40 World Championship team but  some even have returned to college already.
The delivery up to Newport was stellar. Two of our supporters Victor Rivas and Sena Akman were here and jumped on at the last minute and took this short video.

Grand Opening - and Party! - as Promised
Some photos from an amazing Grand Opening Celebration.

US Sailing Olympic Director Josh Adams, Bryan Lawrence, Betsy Lawrence, US Sailing Executive Director Jack Geirhart, Dawn, Ralf Steitz aka the Bionic Baby and Oakcliff board member and Olympian Trevor Moore looking on to pop the champagne.
The Nacra is a mixed event for the Olympics.  Each boat must have one male and one female crew.  So far there is no real pattern as to who skippers and who crews.
Vlad helps launch a 49erFX - the women's skiff - surprise surprise.  Two Nacra's head out the channel for some sailing

And thank you to Molly Riley who took amazing photos from land and air.
Watch the Nationals: On shore, On line, On H20

We have spectator boats or you can follow the racing on line: Twitter, Facebook or Oakcliff Sailing.  The forecast for tomorrow looks to be a slow start but Monday is windy!  The Spectator boat will leave the dock at 10:30, 1:30, 4:30.   If you are out on you own boat the racing is most likely in Cold Spring Harbor.  Also the race committee is on VHF 69 so you can contact Oakcliff Race Control and listen in to the starting sequences.
A final note it is amazing to see 47 high performance Olympic skiffs and cats racing across Cold Spring Harbor - the heat is on!

Sincerely,

43 Days of Chaos
Some of you saw my panic on FaceBook when I realized I was facing 43 days of major events and travel. I'm happy to report after a few deep breaths I am down to 31 days and surviving.

The Nantucket Pro Am where we raised funds for Nantucket Community Sailing was fun and for a great cause.

Neither the mosquitoes nor the fog arrived so the NYYC cruise was really beautiful.  The racing was still intense dodging more lobster pots than I have ever seen.  Seriously - it is normally foggy :-).   We had a great last race with 6 sail changes to finish with a hard fought 2nd.

I made it back to jump into the festivities and tomorrow I'm off to Porto Cervo.

I'll be sailing on Silencio (164 feet) in the Perini Navi Cup and then back to help out on the Oakcliff International.

Friday the 6th I'll pop out to San Francisco to do 5 speeches in 4 days.

Wrapping up the travel will see me flying to Beijing and it has nothing to do with sailing.  I'll be participating in the BMW Foundation's World Young Leaders program again.  This is an amazing think tank and the topic will be: Going Sustainable - Towards Quality Growth in China and the World.

So if anyone reading this is in any of the above mentioned places, let me know and we might be able to squeeze in a coffee.
