Reboot: Acorn Session 2 Starts
49ers Arrive
  July 24 2013
Greetings!
The Farr 40 Youth Team is currently racing the Nationals at Martha's Vineyard.  The second crop of Acorns has arrived and so have the 49ers.   The second half of the summer will see more inshore and high performance dingy activity. This is along with the regularly scheduled programing which you are always encouraged to sign up for on the Oakcliff Calendar.

Speaking of Calendars - I may have inadvertently forgotten to explain that the Grand Opening of Oakcliff's US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider is AUGUST 22.  So this is your fair warning to save the date!

More Like Bat-mobiles than Sailboats
The first 49ers arrived in a container and over the weekend Saplings Collin Kennedy and Parker Lyman worked with volunteer Fred Stammer to put 8 of them together.

The surprise is that once the wings are on they really look like they can fly away.  Before we move them down to the beach we actually have to install some tie-down points or they will literally blow away.

National Championships Registration Open

The NOR is posted and registration is now open for the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra Nationals to be hosted at Oakcliff August 22 to 26.  Here is a link to the registration page.
Tough Farr 40 Youth Team Ready for Battle
Oakcliff's Farr 40 Youth Team will be the youngest team ever to sail in the Farr 40 World Championships.  Today they are competing in Martha's Vineyard in the North American's.  This link takes you to the press release that they have written.  They did a good job of  letting their personalities shine through.  Remember part of what we do at Oakcliff is to give full training for project management and a part of that is fundraising and promotion. As they progress through the summer they are getting better at all aspects from sailing to promotion to fundraising.  If you would like to make a donation to the travel and training fund here is the link.
Solid Line-up for Ninth Match Race this Summer
The Match Race Regattas keep on coming at Oakcliff. Nine down and seven more to go.

The skippers for this week include: Lance Fraser from Bermuda, Canadians Peter Wickwire and Liz Shaw as well as Jon Hammond, Mike Quaglio, Peter Holz, Colin Kennedy and David Storrs  from around the US. Also, congratulations to David Storrs who by his  performance at the Chicago Match Race Doubleheader has secured an Oakcliff International Grand Slam berth.

We also are pleased to have have Sally Barkow leading the clinic on Thursday and Friday.  Racing will take place Saturday and Sunday.  We still have room for some clinic participants. Click here to sign up.   For the weekend you are welcome to take out a Shields and sail around and spectate with your friends and family or be at Oakcliff at 9 and we will get you on a spectator boat.  There will be limited shuttles to shore upon demand.  Email us for more information.

Special thank you to 42 Degrees Photography for some great coverage of many of our events.
Welcome to the new Acorns and a special shout out to Acorns from session one.  What an amazing group.  We all hope that you got in enough sailing, 1000+ miles and sleeping on boats and freeze dried food as well as match racing and a bit of boat work learning and know you are invited to pop back in at any time.

Sincerely,

Dawn and everyone at Oakcliff Sailing
Qualifying Sail - Check!
Jeff MacFarlane finished his qualifying run; 1300 miles alone over 9 days of conservative sailing.  He is taking a well deserved, if short break with fiance Laura and will be back training for the race shortly.

Sail the Sound for Deafness
This will likely be the last newsletter before next Thursday's Sail the Sound for Deafness Regatta.   For supporters you can sail the Classic's race on August 1st but there is no casual BBQ instead you are invited to purchase a dinner ticket HERE for a lovely event at the Mill Neck Manor, a Gold Coast Mansion.  Those who were there last year know that the food and the drink and the work the Mil Neck Schools do as well as the overall atmosphere is quite awesome - used in the correct sense of the word.  Awe-inspiring.
South Shore & Sunday Match Racing
Just a reminder of the parellel programming that happens every week during the summer.

Hunt Lawrence hosts his financial seminar every Friday at 12:15  at 2 South Street.  Everyone is welcome.

Saturdays classic sailors are invited to race on the South Shore.  Some are referring to it as summer camp for adults and it allegedly includes swimming and ice cream! The day begins at 10am at Martin Marine. If you are interested call Jeff Truelove on 443 789 5192.

Sunday afternoon is another match racing opportunity.  You can show up on the dock at 2:30pm or call Ron Saccardo on 516 382 3289 for more information.
