International Racing on All Fronts
Women's Series & Halifax
July 9, 2013

In the days following the celebration of America's independence, Oakcliff is working to celebrate American sailing.  The Ker 50 and Farr 47 are currently fighting for the lead in their classes racing from Marblehead to Halifax and the top women in the world are descending on Oyster Bay to compete in the only North American stop on the Women's International Match Racing Series.

It may seem incredible but even with 32 sailors racing to Halifax and 63 sailors and volunteers match racing, we still have our regularly scheduled programing going on.  So sign up on the calendar to reserve your spot.

Women bring Grade 1 to Oakcliff
Eight of the top internationally ranked female skippers will do battle in Oyster Bay Thursday through Sunday.  They will e fighting not only for a win but also for their share of a $10,000 purse and a shot at the overall series prize money of $50,000.  Skippers from Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand and the US will race on this, the 4th stop of the International Series.   The quality of the teams means that ISAF should certify this as a Grade 1 event, the top grade available.

Sapling Grad Madeline Gill is fielding her own team and other Oakcliff sailors are scattered throughout the teams.   Racing will be from approximately 10-5 daily and we will have a spectator boat.  Please email race@oakcliffsailing.org the day before to inquire about space.

A special thanks to Jack Halyards, Hammer Human Performance and Sport, Goslings Rum and Oyster Bay Brewing Company for your support.
Safety at Sea Training - Pure Oakcliff
As we approached July 4th it was all hands on deck getting the Farr 47 ready to go as well as double checking the Ker 50.

The Acorns and Saplings had an intense week beginning with a two day Safety at Sea Seminar.  There was  classroom as well as hands on training including fire fighting, firing off flares, man overboard drills and of course liferaft drills.  All of the in the water activities were done at the Beach where the Olympic dinghies launch from mixing the ultimate fragile race boats with rugged offshore training on the same site.  We also had an old expired liferaft that we inflated and used...and then carried back to Oakcliff... I wonder what the neighbors thought :-)

Oakcliff Boats SOLID in Halifax Race
Both the Farr 47 and the Ker 50 have been sailing absolutely solid races in the Marblehead to Halifax Race.  On the race tracking since the start on Sunday afternoon, both of the boats have been sitting somewhere in the top three of their class and holding respectable overall standings.

The herculean push by all of the staff and trainees to get the boats ready must make the race seem easy... almost.    This is the offshore Acorn Session and between the 26 hour delivery to Marblehead the 57 or so hours of racing and then the sailing back for another three to four days these sailors are going to improve more than they will realize.  That is until they go back and sail with their old teams.  It is as much sailing as some legs of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The crew on Temptation Oakcliff the Ker 50:  John Colburn, Chris Smith, Andrew O'Donnell, Pat Murphy, Katie Mooney, Jake Elis, Richie Santry, Brendan Larrabee, Elizabeth Shaw (sailing into her home port of Halifax) Seth Cooley, Max Vos,  LJ Edgcomb, Art Santry, Billy Rudkin, Rachel Yanneli and boat captain Mike "Koko" Komar.

On the Farr 47: Parker Lyman, Oliver Shenberg, Cam Mulhall, Boat Captain Hobie Ponting, Allie Gray, Charlie Singer, Sarah Ragle, James Downer, Vincent Yanneli, Dan Flanigan, Jake Arcand, Jay Kehoe, Tom Talbot and Collin Kennedy.

Way to hang tough team!
Match Racing Galore: Back to Back to Back
Match 40s practice
At the same time as we were preparing for the Halifax Race and doing the Safety at Sea and all of our regularly scheduled programing we  also hosted two match racing event.

Congratulations to David Storrs and his team including all-star-all-round Koko for winning the first event.  This was a part of the Andrew Campbell Clinegatta so the Offshore Acorns also got their match race training in.  Much as the Match Race Acorns starting in two weeks will also get some offshore miles.

The second event went to Harry Thurston who normally is part of the crew for Will Tiller.  Harry and teammate Stewart Dodson are hanging around Oakcliff, sailing, training, coaching and basically helping out before they go on the road again which will include the Red Bull Youth America's Cup ... which so far looks to be the most exiting part of the American's Cup.

It is getting late so I think it is time to stop writing and start sending. It is also time for the kids on Temptation Oakcliff to celebrate a bit - they have just crossed the finish line!  Currently sitting 2nd in class and 6th overall.  Watch here to see the 47 finish and have a bit of a celebration at home.

Finally don't forget to come down and watch some great racing this week and as a special bonus you can sail with some of the teams as they join in on the Wednesday Fleet Racing with Coaching and Thursday's Classic Sailing.

See you very soon,

So Fast the Cops Pull Them Over!
Have you seen the Nacras out sailing?  Pretty fast aren't they?  Well the police though so and pulled them over!

They are going to try not to go over 5mph but they are so fast it is hard to slow them down!

The 49ers are on their way too and should be here this week.  Now we just have to put them all together and finish the beach.

SAVE THE DATE
AUGUST 22

We will have the beach fully up and running and will have a Grand Opening Celebration of Oakcliff activating our status as an Official Training Center of US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider for sailors headed for the Olympics!
