Summer Sailstice = Go Sailing!
All the Boats are Home
June 18, 2013
Greetings!
Our whiteboard for today is titled: INCOMING!  Almost all of the Saplings have returned, 12 new Acorns showed up today and top Olympic hopeful John Casey is on site helping us build the Nacras.

It's a good thing that we have plenty of light as we approach Summer Solstice to get everything shoved into each and every day.  This weekend is also named Summer Sailstice.

Oakcliff is hosting a 'Summer Solstice Free Skate' on Sunday.  All supporters are welcome to come down and go sailing.  We'll have 'start times' of 10 and 12  to take out a match 40 or a shields for a fun sail and 2:00 to join in match racing with the classic sailors.

Literally, bring your friends, your family, a picnic sail for an hour or 8.  Go straight to OBMC and we'll sort you out.  If you have any questions email us and any issues on the day call my cell 415 760 7642.  Also please take a moment and click here tell the rest of the world what you plan to do.

Women's Match Racing Rock Stars
The US Sailing Championships have been hot and cold over the past years but this year the Women's Match Racing Championships collected the who's who of women's racers.  Our team of Madeline Gill, Liz Hjorth, Ann Schwagerl, Ivy Binns and Sarah Ragle faced off against some very tough competition and had some tough races early on.  The great news is that they stuck with it and were able to pull themselves up to the top of the consolation round finishing in 5th.    Kudos have to go to Suzy Leech who twisted arms to get the event to happen and the team at the Chicago Match Race Center for executing.

Madeline reports:

We arrived Wednesdayto see a bit of the city and settle in before the sailing started. A cold front passed through that afternoon and brought in some seriously breezy conditions for our first experience with the Tom 28s on Thursday. Sailing in Belmont Harbor on Lake Michigan with 20-25 knots from the north made for a very wet introduction to the dinghy-esque boats. Luckily, Thursday afternoon and Friday morning clinic sessions were calmer and allowed us to get a better feel for the boats and brush up on some match racing tactics.

Racing on Friday and Saturday got us through two full round robins with variable conditions. We saw anywhere from 5-15 knots, shifting consistently south, bringing a welcomed relief from the chop. Jumping into the boats for the first time, sailing with a team we had not gotten the chance to train with, and racing against some strong competitors made the races tough; we came out of the round robins with a 2-12 record landing us in eighth place. Sunday started another double round robin for the consolation series, racing for places 5-8. We worked through many of the  issues we had been encountering all week in the first round robin, but came out of the second round robin undefeated and ended the regatta in fifth place. Overall, the event was a huge learning experience and we were definitely glad to have had the opportunity to sail with CMRC.

Congratulations also to Jen Wilson, Sally Barkow, Katie Pettibone, Sandy Svoboda and Krista Paxton for winning and getting invites to all Grand Slam as well as Oakcliff's New York Women's Invitational.
Alzheimer's Regatta Exceeded Goals
Together we raised $26,231, over the first year goal of $25,000.   Congratulations also goes to George Franke who's team not only raised $850 but also won the sailing race.

Ron and Lorraine Stattle, Bill and Dan Simon and Vlad helped run the poker run which was something totally new - our volunteers maned 5 of our RIBS while SUP -Stand up Paddle Boarders from Step In Liquid and many kayakers  traveled from boat to boat and picked up playing cards,  Back at Sagamore the cards were laid on the table to determine the winner.

The dinner after was an excellent affair with a full on BBQ including lobsters and a band that was 12 piece or more.  The weather couldn't have been more beautiful.  This was the first time we all came together to run this event and I'm looking forward to next year.  Save the date June 15, 2014!

Farr 40 Kids Put to the Test

Coach Jay Kehoe Reports:  We were the first non-pro team, meaning that the only pro onboard our boat was ME. The other boats had  pros trimming, doing tactics and running the bow. Good news is we had Saplings and former Saplings who can do just about anything if talked thru it a few times.

We had some great first beats and awesome starts, thanks to Max Vos and Seth Cooley working hard on communicating thru the start. Our sail trim off the line was awesome, we had Jake Arcand trimming jib and Dan Flanigan trimming main and the boat had great pace off the line pretty consistently. The highlight of the regatta had to be race 5 where we came off the line and controlled our destiny! Rounding the weather mark in 3rd and it was awesome!

We have some areas that need some work, our corners were lets just say not great and we need to really focus on changing gears especially after mark-rounding, these are all items we can work on here at Oakcliff! Which of course we will as practices are being planned right now for the entire summer.

All in all it was a great 4 day event where our Saplings got to meet the leaders or our sport and spend time with pro's who were very happy to spend time to chat with our sailors. I would say it was mission accomplished to a very high degree

We really really want you to come and sail with us.  The new crop of acorns are fresh and entertaining.  Sign up and come down to join in the fun.

Sincerely,

Dawn Riley

Acorns Arrived
Tonight's Tuesday Match Race Drills are still on even if they are a bit soggy.  We don't have a lot of supporters signed up for tonight - BUT - we have had an influx of Acorns who have shown up, got checked into their housing and are currently being educated in the accounting procedures manual and handbook and trust me - they are going to be VERY happy to go sailing and be let out of class.

Temptation v Rambler
I didn't get a full report from the Ker 50 but they were in a tough class of the TP 52s and  some new boats.  They reported that it was 'awesome' and when I pushed the favorite moment of our famous Sapling - Charlie Singer was peering around the bow to see the HUGE Rambler flying through.  I am thinking he was 'stoked'.
