Breaking News From Spain
Saplings Everywhere
April 26, 2013
Greetings!
We were not planning on sending out a newsletter this week but wanted to get you the news at the same time it is being released to the press.  Sapling Graduate Jeff MacFarlane was air lifted off of his Mini in the Mediterranean Sea last night.  It was a harrowing ordeal but he and his boat are on dry land and he is determined to continue.  The full report can be read here.

Jeff and a Class 40
Update: this report was filed by Jeff's fiancee Laura (congratulations)  before his qualifying run which is reported above.

Jeff was based out of Genova last week at Yacht Club Italiano for the Gran Premio d'Italia where he competed in a 500 mile race.

He sailed with Andrea Fornaro, who sailed the Star in the last Olympics for Italy. They seem to really click so hopefully it is a good match. If all goes well, they are planning to do some other races together. The tracker showed it was a tough race with speeds of 1.7, 2.5, etc...

Jeff spent most of the race in third, but they changed positions pretty frequently, after a frustrating back and forth it all went good and Jeff and Andrea and they finished 2nd.

Jeff's continual podium finishes have him ranked #1 in the world. Pretty cool. He has 33 points, and #2 person has 19 and isn't sailing in this race.  Next stop an 800 mile qualifying run and he will be ready for the Mini Transat!
Future Saplings Doing Cool Things
Oakcliff 2013 Saplings Brendan Prior and Dan Flanigan have one big project to get done before they arrive for the summer.  They are working on a Autonomous Boat to cross the Atlantic .

Scout is a twelve foot long autonomous robotic boat designed to cross the Atlantic Ocean, relying only on pre-programmed commands and information that it can collect about its environment through sensors. It is built to deal with anything the ocean can throw at it, and its status will be reported live online.

It is scheduled to be launched the week of of May 25-26, website is www.gotransat.com.

Sapling Sarah
Welcome to Sapling Sarah Ragle.  She was born and raised in the mountains of Colorado where she learned to sail on Lake Dillon in 2005. She has raced very actively in the Dillon Yacht Club J22 and J24 fleets since then. Further afield, Sarah has raced in the J24 Nationals, North Americans and World Championships. She also raced in Key West Race Week, as well as Charleston Race Week in 2013 both on Swan 42's. Prior to Key West Race Week, she competed in the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race, as her first time offshore.

With sailing in her blood she is looking forward to a great summer at Oakcliff, and in fact in her first week she had a new experience - she drove a truck for the first time - much to the amusement of her teammates who figured that was de rigueur for a sailor from Colorado.

America's Cup Speech
Next Thursday I'll be speaking at the Port Washington Library at 7:30pm.  The topic will be an "Insider's view of the America's Cup".  The good news about being experienced in but not involved in this year's event is that I can give my opinions without any filters.  All are welcome.

On the same night Jay will be at Jack Halyards for a benefit Wine Tasting Dinner - you get to taste great wine, sample food of the new chef, who is A-mazing and get to be entertained by Coach Jay.  Email Bernie for reservations
