Bishop Watterson Wednesday News
|
April 20, 2016
Dear Parents,
Pope Francis said, "Ours is not a joy that comes from having many possessions, but it comes from having encountered a Person, Jesus, who is among us. ... Follow Jesus! We accompany, we follow Jesus, but above all we know that he accompanies us and carries us on His shoulders. This is our joy, this is the hope that we must bring to this world of ours."
May this joy be shared with everyone we meet!
Sincerely, Marian Hutson Principal

Mr. Ray Maurer's Work In Jubilee Museum
If you find yourself checking out the Jubilee Museum at St. Mary in German Village this summer, look for the Pectoral Cross and the Episcopal Ring of Bishop George A. Fulcher of Lafayette, Indiana. The two items have a Bishop Watterson connection: they were created for the bishop's installation by BWHS art teacher Ray Maurer in 1983. Bishop Fulcher was a native of Columbus and Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Columbus from 1976-83. When Bishop Fulcher passed away in 1984, the ring and cross were returned to the artist, Mr. Maurer, who has now donated them to the Jubilee Museum.

Let's Be Safe Drivers
Did you know a pedestrian's chance of death when struck by a vehicle moving 40 mph is 85%? The City of Columbus has provided the Guide to Reducing Neighborhood Speeding brochure which has information and reminders for anyone operating a motor vehicle.
Please be a good example and also remind your children who drive to school:
- Do not speed in the neighborhoods and use extra care in the parking areas around the school.
- Allow extra time to reduce stress and the inclination to speed.
- Do not use phones or other devices while operating a motor vehicle. It is not just teenagers that are observed reading a phone while driving

Annual Fund
Did you know that the Annual Eagle Fund bridges the cost of tuition and the actual cost of a Bishop Watterson education? The support of the entire Bishop Watterson community makes a difference!
As of today, we are currently at 68% of our $300,000 goal. Your generosity will help us to keep pace with technology advancement, ongoing facility enhancements, and will help us to provide tuition assistance funds and grants to those desiring a Catholic education for their children. We are grateful to all who give their time and donations to support our school. You may donate by clicking here.

Vaccine Requirement for Juniors
A new state law requires that all students entering their senior year of high school for the 2016-17 school year must have received two doses of meningococcal vaccine. Please note: doses must be given 8 weeks apart. Proof of the MCV4 vaccine must be turned into the BWHS office by the first day of school which will be August 24, 2016. Vaccines can be administered by your pediatrician or your county health department.

State Mandated Testing
As you know, the Ohio Graduation Test has been replaced by state developed "end of the year" exams. Students must take tests in algebra, geometry, English language arts, American history, American government, and biology over a four year period and accumulate 18 points in order to graduate. The waiver private schools received last year was only for the 2014-2015 school year; we are required to administer the exams this year.
Students will be tested in five curriculum areas depending on their grade level. Freshmen will be tested in Algebra I or geometry, and English language arts. Sophomores will be tested in geometry, English language arts, American history and biology. Each test consists of two 90 minute sections. All tests must be completed in a ten day consecutive block.
We will begin testing on April 19 and finish on April 29. Please try to make sure your child is not absent on those days.
In order to provide a quiet and conducive testing environment, classes will end at 1:35 pm and testing will begin at 1:50 pm on four of the designated testing days with the other four having regular dismissal.
April 19 and April 20 - English Language Arts for freshmen and sophomores (dismissal between 3:15-3:30); dismissal for juniors and seniors is 1:35 p.m. April 21 and April 22 - Algebra and Geometry for freshmen and sophomores (dismissal between 3:15-3:30); dismissal for juniors and seniors is 1:35 p.m. April 26 and April 27 - Biology - sophomores - regular dismissal for all students April 28 and April 29 - American History - sophomores - regular dismissal for all students
