Bishop Watterson Wednesday News
January 27, 2016
Dear Parents,

When the cold makes us shiver and there is no sun in sight, let us make winter a little bit warmer by praying that the warmth of God's eternal light may shine brightly upon our lives and those around us.

Have a blessed week.

Sincerely,
Marian Hutson
Principal

ACT Research has shown that it is the rigor of coursework - rather than simply the number of core courses - that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness. A look at ACT scores shows that Bishop Watterson students are well prepared for college-level work. A five-year summary shows that BWHS student ACT scores in each of the four categories (English, Mathematics, Reading, Science) are above the ACT college readiness benchmark scores. In addition, our school's composite average over the past five years is well above the average for the State of Ohio.

H20 Challenge

This year's H2O challenge begins on Thursday, January 28 and ends on Ash Wednesday, February 10. The purpose of the drive is to commit to drinking nothing but water during the 14-day period. Instead of buying coffee, for example, drink water and set aside the money you would have spent on the coffee. At the end of the challenge, you should have a decent amount of money to donate to our selected charity.

Once again, the collected money will be sent to the Passion Center for Children in Malawi, Africa. Senior Leah Paskell spent some time there this summer and she is excited to share her experience with you! We are challenging EVERYONE in the BWHS family: students, teachers, alumni, etc. Please consider joining the challenge! You can still join in our efforts even if you are unable to go with just water alone. Simply consider giving up your favorite beverage for two weeks. If you have good reason to drink more than just water, then do so! We want everyone to participate at the level that is best for them.
Blue rubber bands, a simple reminder of one's support, and record sheets can be obtained from any Theology teacher. Theology teachers will be collecting money between February 10 and February 12. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. David Klemm, Theology teacher and Human Rights Club moderator, at: dklemm@cdeducation.org and
thank you for your support!

2017 Trip to Italy
Informational Meeting: Thursday, February 11, 7:00 pm, Room 108

RSVP to attend: Signora Lombardo, klombardo@cdeducation.org

Bishop Watterson HS is making a pilgrimage in June 2017!

During our pilgrimage we will examine the intertwined histories and enduring cultures of Italy and Spain, Mediterranean nations that share an affinity for art, architecture and religion (not to mention mouth-watering cuisine). We will visit sites along the Way of St. James and the Way of St. Francis, which are ancient pilgrimage routes in Spain and Italy. Pending confirmation of the Papal schedule, we will also attend a Papal Audience in Rome, along with sites from Park Güell to the Colosseum and Sistine Chapel, gaining new perspectives on these pillars of Europe and the importance of mindful and prayerful travel.

Please plan to attend the February 11 informational meeting and RSVP to Signora Lombardo by February 8. klombardo@cdeducation.org.
2017 Trip to Cuba
Informational Meeting: Thursday, February 4, 6:00 pm, Room 204

RSVP to attend: Sra. Geers, tgeers@cdeducation.org

Just 90 miles separate Cuba from the United States, and yet this island nation has been a world away for more than 50 years. As the doors slide open to U.S. travel and business again, Cuba is sure to reinvent itself. Its rich legacies of fine arts, music, and dance and its current political and economic realities make it a hotspot once again.

Sra. Geers is planning a trip, tentatively scheduled for June 12-20, 2017.

Hola
Cuba! Hola Havana! With a local guide, discover Ernest Hemingway's home and the Che Guevara mausoleum. Visit a sugar plantation, then tour Trinidad, a Spanish living museum. Visit with local high school students, then tour Old Havana. Later, a discussion on Cuban history and US & Cuban relations.

Please join trip coordinator Sra. Teresa Geers for an informational meeting on Thursday, February 4, at 6:00 pm in room 204.

School Calendar Updates
ACT Aspire Student Score Reports: Score reports will not be available until four to six weeks after ALL schools' testing window has closed. This means that even though students took the test in October, we will need to wait until the end of this month or into February before we can access our students' score reports.

PSAT Student Score Reports: Students and parents can access an online report through their online free College Board accountJuniors created a collegeboard account last year. We suggested to students that their user name be their initials plus student ID and then password be their brainhoney password from that year. Sophomores will need to create an account. When creating an account, we suggest they have a user name and password that they will remember and use all four years of high school. Even though CollegeBoard will not send us paper copies until January 29th.
