December 18, 2015

Dear Parents,

Many of you have decorated your Christmas tree in your home filled with lights and ornaments.  We, too, have decorated our Christmas tree in our "home" here at school.  When we both light our trees, we are reminded that God is the light of the world.  May we be true lights in the lives of the people we meet each day.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Bishop Watterson!

Sincerely,
Marian Hutson
Principal
Classroom Renovations Celebrated

It's the gift-giving time of year and Bishop Watterson High School is reflecting with gratitude on a tremendous gift received during this past summer. While the students were on summer break and the 61-year-old building sat empty, six classrooms in junior hall were renovated, a gift to BWHS from several dedicated alumni, current parents and even folks new to the BWHS community ... click here to read the full story.

Sacred Heart Enthronement

Bishop Watterson will enthrone our school to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Mass on January 8th, 2016. In the enthronement ceremony, BWHS faculty, staff, students and  parents will invite Jesus in and make a public declaration that He is the King of our school. Images of the Sacred Heart will be placed in all classrooms and other areas of the school to recognize Him and the place of honor He deserves. Please join us for this special event at 10:30 am in the new gym. Many blessings are sure to come to us following this momentous occasion! Pope Francis' Year of Mercy

As a community, Bishop Watterson will be focusing on the Jubilee Year of Mercy from December 8, 2015 through November 20, 2016, as declared by Pope Francis. We invite our families to join us in seeking to live out the Pope's call to become more merciful in our own lives and to bring God's mercy to others.
The Popes calls us to several specific actions, including: steeping ourselves in the Word of God, regularly participating in the Sacrament of Confession, and participating in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

Each month we will be focusing on a specific action of mercy and witnessing how we have encountered God's mercy in our lives.  In December we are collecting food and toiletries for several organizations who help those in need.  We invite participation in this project from every family. In addition, we seek to accept the Pope's call to help those in need when we encounter them.  Sometimes we may want to turn away when we encounter someone in need, the Pope reminds us that in doing so, we are turning away from Christ himself. To be merciful means to stand with another in their need. Through our solidarity, we can become more humble and compassionate.

Social Media & Technology Tips for Parents
Following are some links to keep you up to date on what's happening with teens and social media.

Is screen time or social media affecting your sleep or the quality of your sleep? We found this interesting article about a study of teens in London.

As the Year of Mercy begins, we thought parents might be interested in Our Sunday Visitor's free app, 365 Days to Mercy. Available will be daily reflections on mercy, Pope Francis' tweets, daily scripture reflections, book excerpts, Year of Mercy news stories, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Novena, and more. It is available in the App Store on Apple phones and on Google play for others.

We hope you all have a fantastic holiday season spending time with family and friends!
As we head into the new year and resolutions become a part of life once again, we found this list of apps that help track where the time really goes. How much time do we all spend online or on our phones texting, etc.? These apps might help answer that question and make us more aware of the lost time on technology, not only for ourselves but also for our teens.
