Bishop Watterson Wednesday News
December 16, 2015
Dear Parents,

Many of you have decorated your Christmas tree in your home filled with lights and ornaments.  We, too, have decorated our Christmas tree in our "home" here at school.  When we both light our trees, we are reminded that God is the light of the world.  May we be true lights in the lives of the people we meet each day.

Sincerely,
Marian Hutson
Principal

Classroom Renovation Gifts Celebrated

It's the gift-giving time of year and Bishop Watterson High School is reflecting with gratitude on a tremendous gift received during this past summer. While the students were on summer break and the 61-year-old building sat empty, six classrooms in junior hall were renovated, a gift to BWHS from several dedicated alumni, current parents and even folks new to the BWHS community ... click here to read the full story.

Students To Light Clintonville
Christmas Tree

Bishop Watterson's National Merit Scholar, John Markiewicz, and Commended Scholars Erin O'Brien, Alex Proca and Joel Silleck have been granted the honor of lighting the official Clintonville Christmas tree on Sunday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m. In addition, the BWHS choir will sing at the annual celebration. We invite all families to join us at the Whetstone Park Shelter House this Sunday!

Sacred Heart Enthronement

Bishop Watterson will enthrone our school to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Mass on January 8th, 2016. In the enthronement ceremony, BWHS faculty, staff, students and  parents will invite Jesus in and make a public declaration that He is the King of our school. Images of the Sacred Heart will be placed in all classrooms and other areas of the school to recognize Him and the place of honor He deserves. Please join us for this special event at 10:30 am in the new gym. Many blessings are sure to come to us following this momentous occasion! To learn more about the Sacred Heart devotion, please visit www.sacredheartcolumbus.org.

Seeking French Exchange Host Families

france Did you miss out on the opportunity to host an Italian exchange student this past fall? Well, you're in luck. There is a French exchange program in February.

Why not host an exchange student from Bishop Watterson's sister-school in France in your home for two weeks this February. There is no fee to do so and the benefits for your child/children are immense. The French students are fully chaperoned by teachers from our sister-school, Institution St. Joseph in Le Havre in Normandy.   Plus, NO FRENCH is necessary. In fact, we are actively seeking non-French students to take part in the program.

During the two weeks, your exchange student will accompany your BWHS student to school and will either go to school with him/her or go on day trips to various cultural, historical, scientific or governmental sights in Central Ohio. Your student may go on the trips too (two maximum) if he/she wants. Your only responsibility is to provide a home, transportation to/from school (and occasionally evening activities), meals and sack lunches. Finally, should you wish, your student can return the visit to France this June - at an approximate cost of around $2,000.00 for two full weeks.

So, why not? We need nearly 30 host families from February 6-20, 2016, and we could certainly use your help. We're especially looking for hosts for boys. Contact Jim Dury at jdury@cdeducation.org or 268.8671 (324) for more information or to sign up. Merci!

Italian Exchange Sign-ups Underway

One of Bishop Watterson's two sister schools in Florence, Italy sent an exchange group of twenty students this past fall! So, now it's time for BWHS to return the visit. We are hoping to send a group from March 30- April 10, 2016. During the trip, the students will stay with an Italian family as one of their family members and will take part in daily excursions to sites of cultural, artistic, historical and governmental interest. Students will also visit one of our sister schools and experience life as an Italian high school student first hand.

The trip is open to all Bishop Watterson students and NO Italian is necessary. The cost for the entire trip, including travel to/from Florence and all in-country programming costs, is approximately $2,000.00. Two BWHS teachers will be accompanying the students as chaperones.  No where else could you even approach a fully chaperoned and guided trip to Italy at this price.

So, why not? As we all know, the world is a small place these days - and getting smaller. Send Mr. Jim Dury an e-mail at jdury@cdeducation.org for more information. But don't wait too long. The trip is expected to close by early January.

Social Media Tip
We hope you all have a fantastic holiday season spending time with family and friends!
As we head into the new year and resolutions become a part of life once again, we found this list of apps that help track where the time really goes. How much time do we all spend online or on our phones texting, etc.? These apps might help answer that question and make us more aware of the lost time on technology, not only for ourselves but also for our teens.

Diocesan Calendar Changes for 2016-17

calendar
As the Diocese of Columbus Office of Catholic Schools sets the framework for school calendars each year. We wanted to let you know about key dates and a significant change for the 2016-17 school year.

Key Dates
First Day: Wednesday, August 24, 2016
Last Day: Thursday, June 1, 2017

For the 2016-2017 school year, the customary week off during the spring will NOT coincide with the week following Easter. Instead of having an Easter break, we will now have the following days off:

Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday (April 13-17, 2017)

Spring Break during the week of March 27-31, 2017

By providing this information now, we hope to assist parents to plan vacations accordingly with these dates in mind. Keep in mind that it is more difficult for your children and our staff if you stretch your breaks by taking your children out of school before the break actually begins.
