Bishop Watterson Wednesday News
October 28, 2015
Dear Parents,

Please join us for our All Souls Day Mass on Monday, November 2 at 10:30 am.  Let us pray for our deceased relatives, friends and all members of our Bishop Watterson community who have died and gone before us.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.  Amen

Have a great week.

Sincerely,
Marian Hutson

Tyler's Light

On Monday, October 19th, Mr. Wayne Campbell of "Tyler's Light" came to Bishop Watterson High School to speak to our student body. The theme of his campaign is "Speak up! Save a Life".  The program focuses on drug abuse education and prevention as well as emphasizing the core values of reliability, trust, integrity, honesty, loyalty, respect, and dignity. All of these core values resonate strongly with our school administration as they are exactly what we want to see in our student body. If you are interested in learning more about Tyler's Light, please visit the program website at www.tylerslight.com.

"Say Something" Campaign

Counselors are not only available to help with academic concerns; they can help with a student's social and emotional issues. As a follow up to last week's speaker and an outreach effort, counselors distributed "Say Something" locker tags.  The locker tags were placed on each student's locker to encourage them to "Say Something" if they are concerned about a fellow student's well being. A referral form was put on the back of each locker tag.

If you or your child know of any student suffering from depression, anxiety, abuse, or any struggle, we encourage that you participate in this campaign.  Students can anonymously complete "say something" cards and place them in the striped box in the main office or given directly to a counselor. We hope your child will use the referral form to report any concerns about a peer or to self-identify.  We have already received numerous referrals from our student body and are assisting students with a variety of needs.

Extra referral forms are located in the main office. Please contact a counselor if you have any questions or for further information on this on-going outreach effort.

This is a very critical period for our school community. We recognize that Bishop Watterson students are not immune to any threat to wellness or safety. That being said, nothing is more important to our faculty and staff than the safety of our students. It is our belief that in order for this program to be effective and sustainable we must work together as a unit. We ask that parents also take ownership in this process and support Bishop Watterson High School in its efforts to spread the values of this campaign both within the walls of our school and within our community.

7 BWHS Teams Compete in Clintonville Halloween Hop

The annual Clintonville Halloween Hop is underway and Bishop Watterson has seven teams participating in this window-painting event! BWHS students have been painting Halloween-themed windows at the following businesses: Balanced Yoga, E-Merge, Weiland's Market, Unique Treasures, Minister Realty, Lucky's Market and Clintonville Outfitters.
Students from Whetstone High School and the Graham School will be painting windows at other participating businesses.
All businesses have red boxes near their checkout area to accept donations to Clintonville art programs, a percentage of which will go to the art programs at the three schools.
Starting on Friday and until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, customers can vote for their favorite window by filling out a ballot at any of the participating businesses. It doesn't matter what box the vote goes into as long as a favorite window is selected. The top three people's choice windows can win some extra dough for the participating school's art program so if you're out in Clintonville on Saturday, vote for one of the BWHS student windows!

Save the Date: Open House
Sunday, November 22, 2015
1:00-3:30 p.m.
Do you have friends or family currently considering which high school their children will attend?
Your testimony to family and friends about your personal experience or your children's experience at Bishop Watterson can make a difference! You know firsthand how Bishop Watterson prepares our students to live the Gospel message of Jesus Christ beyond high school, through our focus on faith, academics, service, athletics and co-curricular activities. Our current parents, past parents and alums are uniquely qualified to speak for Bishop Watterson and be a witness to why we say Christ is the reason for our school.
So please invite those considering the high school decision to visit our annual Fall Open House for prospective students on Sunday, November 22 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. It is an opportunity to meet faculty, staff and coaches, and to take a guided tour of the Bishop Watterson facilities with a student. Principal Marian Hutson will give a presentation at 2:00 p.m.
Deacon Chris Campbell would be happy to answer any questions, at (614) 268-8671, ext. 229.

Annual Fund Kickoff

Today is the official start of Bishop Watterson's Annual Eagle Fund drive! The Annual Eagle Fund is the school's largest and most important annual fundraising campaign because it provides unrestricted funding that will be used for this school year's operating costs such as:

-Bridging the gap between the tuition charged and the actual cost of a Bishop Watterson education
-Providing tuition assistance for students in need
-Keeping pace with technology
-Financing ongoing facility enhancements and upgrades
-Maintaining the best learning environment possible

Last school year we raised just over $270,000 for the Annual Eagle Fund; this year our goal is $300,000. In order to reach that goal, one of our key objectives is to increase the percentage of our alumni and parents that give to the Annual Eagle Fund. Among Catholic high schools nationally, the average alumni giving percentage to an annual fund is 12%; for current parents, the average is 27%. Our averages at Bishop Watterson are 10% for alumni and 18% for current parents. We feel strongly that we are better than average and we are working hard to increase those numbers. All gifts, regardless of the amount are important, very much appreciated and will have an immediate impact on the school!

We are asking that all Bishop Watterson families, alumni and friends prayerfully consider a gift to the Annual Eagle Fund this year so that we can "Soar to New Heights!"
Email Changes and Wednesday News
Email Change: If you have a change to your email address, please let Chris Hilty in the main office know by emailing her at: chilty@cdeducation.org.

Opt-Ins: If you recently opted into Wednesday News from our home page with a new email address, please let Chris know so that she can update your information in the school system. Our email service is separate from the school's database.

If you are among the few who accidentally opted out of Wednesday News and went through the process to opt back in (by going to the link on our home page AND responding to the email from Constant Contact), please email Colleen Mar, cmar@cdeducation.org with your student's name and grade so that we can make sure you are on grade-level distribution lists.
BYOD Stickers
In keeping with our policy that student-owned devices must be properly registered with the BYOD program (parental approval also required), students are being issued BYOD stickers. These are clings that can be cleanly removed from the devices at the end of the school year. Stickers have been distributed to all students!

Ski Club Information

Ski Club will to Snow Trails in Mansfield, Ohio due to Mad River Mountain's unfortunate lodge fire in September. Many students at our Club Day meeting suggested that they would actually prefer to go to Snow Trails, which is comparable in distance and cost. Each student will be required to pay the bus fee in order to receive access to the online registration process. It is important that you pay your bus fee first, so that you can access the lower group rates on the Snow Trails website. The bus fee is a $120, non-refundable payment that covers the cost of all six evenings of Ski Club. The bus fee check should be written to Bishop Watterson and turned in to Mrs. Barrett who will then provide an access code to purchase a ski pass.

Price Increases: online prices increase after 10/15 and 11/15
2016 Dates: 1/6, 1/13, 1/20, 1/27, 2/3, and 2/10
Time: 3:30 - 9:30 (students must be on the bus by 8:30 to return to BWHS)
Price: Bus - $120, remaining costs will vary based on type of ski package purchased
Please feel free to contact teacher/Ski Club advisor Corey Barrett (cbarrett@cdeducation.org, homeroom 319) with questions.
