It's That Giving Time of Year ... Consider the Annual Eagle Fund!

"A Bishop Watterson education forever shapes the type of persons our
graduates grow up to be: bright, caring and engaged. It is the mission of
Bishop Watterson to make that life-altering experience available to all families who desire to share in it. The Annual Eagle Fund makes that possible."
-- John Stock, current and past parent

The Annual Eagle Fund is the school's largest and most important annual fundraising campaign because it provides unrestricted funding that will be used for this school year's operating costs such as:

-Bridging the gap between the tuition charged and the actual cost of a Bishop Watterson education
-Providing tuition assistance for students in need
-Keeping pace with technology
-Financing ongoing facility enhancements and upgrades
-Maintaining the best learning environment possible

Last school year we raised just over $270,000 for the Annual Eagle Fund; this year our goal is $300,000. In order to reach that goal, one of our key objectives is to increase the percentage of our alumni and parents that give to the Annual Eagle Fund. Among Catholic high schools nationally, the average alumni giving percentage to an annual fund is 12%; for current parents, the average is 27%. Our averages at Bishop Watterson are 10% for alumni and 18% for current parents. We feel strongly that the Bishop Watterson community is better than average and we are working hard to increase those numbers. All gifts, regardless of the amount are important, very much appreciated and will have an immediate impact on the school!

We are asking that all Bishop Watterson families, alumni and friends prayerfully consider a gift to the Annual Eagle Fund this year so that we can "Soar to New Heights!"

You can give by mailing a check and designating Annual Fund or by clicking here .
Eagle Auction - Midnight in Paris
Midnight in Paris was the theme of this year's Eagle Auction, held on October 31 at Bishop Watterson High School. The evening included a silent and live action, and a delicious dinner catered by Sue Khourie '79 Preston of Preston Catering. We are very thankful to Mary Beth DeSantis who chaired this wonderful event. Nancy McEwan and Jennie Statczar set the stage with the beautiful decorations and organized the silent auction while Barb Good '89 Fortkamp and Beth Good '91 Pritchard coordinated the homeroom baskets. Joy Bair was responsible for corporate sponsors and Kim Price designed the program. Chris Fallon '68 Hilty worked behind the scenes in making this event possible.
Aucutioneers for the auction were our own Deacon Chris Campbell '77 and Alumni Director Scott Manahan.  Thank you to all who attended, contributed, and supported our largest fundraiser of the year!

The Alumni Department provides service at St. Lawrence Haven on the second Wednesday of each month. We prepare and package meals for the daily lunch line. We normally volunteer from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
St. Lawrence Haven is the St. Vincent de Paul-run sack lunch program. The Haven sits behind Holy Family Church at the corner of Rich and Main streets downtown. Approximately 300-500 meals are served each day.
The staff at St. Lawrence Haven is very appreciative of the assistance we provide and we are very thankful
for the alumni and friends who have taken time out of their busy schedules to help with this service endeavor.

If you are interested in helping on December 8, or at a future time, please email Terri Kernan at tkernan@cdeducation.org. We would love to have you join us!

St. Joseph of Arimathea Society Inductees

Bishop Watterson recently inducted 28 young men into its St. Joseph of Arimathea Society, a group named after the man who took the body of Jesus from the cross and placed it in his own new tomb. The group, now in its fourth year, consists of juniors and seniors who have been trained and commissioned for the service of assisting at the burial of the departed as pallbearers.

The SJA Society has a monthly meeting to discuss issues, talk about experiences, and to pray for the faithful departed, especially those whom they have recently served.

Open House

 Sunday, November 22, 2015

1:00-3:30 p.m.

Do you have friends or family currently considering which high school their children will attend?
Your testimony to family and friends about your personal experience or your children's experience at Bishop Watterson can make a difference! You know firsthand how Bishop Watterson prepares our students to live the Gospel message of Jesus Christ beyond high school, through our focus on faith, academics, service, athletics and co-curricular activities. Our current parents, past parents and alumni are uniquely qualified to speak for Bishop Watterson and be a witness to why we say Christ is the reason for our school.

So please invite those considering the high school decision to visit our annual Fall Open House for prospective students on Sunday, November 22 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. It is an opportunity to meet faculty, staff and coaches, and to take a guided tour of the Bishop Watterson facilities with a student. Principal Marian Hutson will give a presentation at 2:00 p.m.
Deacon Chris Campbell would be happy to answer any questions, at (614) 268-8671, ext. 229.
Eucharistic Adoration: December 2

We hold Eucharistic Adoration in the chapel on the first Wednesday of each month. We have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in our Chapel throughout the school day.  It begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends with Benediction at 2:45 p.m. Parents are welcome to sign-up by emailing or calling Immaculate Conception parishioners Bill and Mary Beth Hinger at bhinger@columbus.rr.com or (614) 262-9332.  Parents can park in the visitor spots and then come in to spend a holy hour with Our Lord. Students and faculty are also invited to come to the chapel during their conference period, lunchtime, study hall or theology class.

Watterson 101

We are so blessed at
Bishop Watterson!

Did you know ....?
  • Bishop Watterson offers 163 courses, from the arts through world languages. We want our students to excel and one way to do that is to offer courses that meet their needs and abilities as well as their interests!
  • Bishop Watterson offers 22 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, 16 honors courses; 14 of our courses qualify for College Credit Plus credits through Ohio Dominican University.
  • Service to the community is part of our sophomore theology curriculum, with BWHS placing students in more than 60 local organizations. In addition, more than 70 percent of our students do volunteer work outside of their sophomore service projects.
  • Ohio High School Athletic Eligibility
Did you know that, according to Ohio High School Athletic Association rules, a high school coach's contact with prospective student athletes, or anyone else, cannot be used to secure the enrollment of a student athlete?
A student athlete becomes a prospective student athlete on the first day of 7th grade and remains so until registered with and accepted by a non-public school or enrolled in a public school.
High schools, like Bishop Watterson, are permitted to mass market not just themselves but also entire programs. When a prospective student athlete has questions relating to enrollment, attendance or the athletic program, the answers are to be provided by the administration or admissions office.
We at Bishop Watterson High School have determined that we will never risk the athletic eligibility of a student-athlete by violating either the letter or the spirit of the recruiting bylaw. While there are many shades of gray in this bylaw, we have adopted a conservative approach to ensure we do not hurt our students. OHSAA Bylaw 4 Section 9 addresses the issue of recruiting.
