Bishop Watterson High School takes seriously our responsibility to promote the overall health and wellness of our student body. One threat to holistic wellness for our students is the temptation to abuse illegal substances. We recognize that Bishop Watterson High School students are not immune to this problem and recognize that our school community has been forced to reflect on this issue. Our feeling is that, as a school community, we must partner with students, parents, and families to take shared ownership of this problem. As a unit we must be willing to listen to students about these pressures, educate our children about the consequences of such behavior, and be willing to create a non-threatening environment that promotes respect, forgiveness, and positive treatment outcomes for those who succumb to the pressures of drug use.
On Monday, October 19th at 10:30 AM we will host Mr. Wayne Campbell, founder of "Tyler's Light". "Tyler's Light" is a non-profit organization aiming to equip communities with information and resources to help people choose a drug-free life, while providing resources for those involved in the battle against addiction. The organization's mission is to create an atmosphere where individuals feel safe in their ability to "speak up" if they or a loved one is in a battle against abuse or addiction. Having lost a son to drug addiction, Mr. Campbell knows first-hand the impact this issue has on families and school communities. His presentations focus on the drugs facing today's youth (alcohol, other opiates, prescription drug abuse, etc.), strategies for education/prevention, and testimonials to the traumatic impact addiction has on students, families, and communities as whole.
We recognize that this information can often bring up a variety of emotions, concerns, and feelings when presented to an adolescent. Please know that our counseling department houses numerous mental health professionals who are specially trained and licensed by the State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Family Therapy Board. They are always available to work with your child and your family on these very complex issues. Also, we recognize that some families may not be comfortable with their child being exposed to this content. Please feel free to contact your child's guidance counselor with any questions or concerns prior to the presentation.
"Tyler's Light" has done programs at many area schools districts such as; Pickerington, Reynoldsburg, Lancaster, and Worthington Christian High School. For more information on "Tyler's Light" and Mr. Campbell please feel free to visit their website at www.tylerslight.com. We invite you to attend this presentation and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this program or its subject matter please do not hesitate to contact us.

Monsignor Spiers Service Awards
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP
Oliver Schroeder/ St. Agatha
"People can receive partial happiness from selfishness and material things, however they are always searching for more. Service has value to me because it ends this search. To me the love given to others in service brings exponentially more happiness and joy than simple material things." In his time at Bishop Watterson, Oliver has been of service to his community through a variety of opportunities. He is an active Honors Band instruction assistant and a leader of the BWHS Middle School Summer Band Camp. He is a familiar face at lunch in helping with the Bishop Watterson Recycling program and Waste Free Watterson. In his home parish of St. Agatha he has helped as a technology assistant in the Palm Sunday Play and has for two years participated on the Cranks Creek Mission trip in Kentucky where he helped give out toys, clothes and food during the Christmas season. Finally, Oliver has dedicated a portion of his summer months to helping with the Our Lady of Bethlehem School and Childcare program.
During the school year Oliver is a member of the St. Joseph of Arimathea Society, a member of the Marching Band, Jazz Band and Pit Orchestra, as well as Prayer Club, Rock Climbing Club, and Student Council. He also holds a part time job at Huffman's market.
Claire Jenkins / Immaculate Conception
Service to Claire can best be summed up in the following statement: "I have always wanted to make a difference in the world and have an impact on others, and service has allowed me that opportunity." Claire has done just that in her home parish of Immaculate Conception and within the Clintonville community. Claire serves as an active altar server, parish nursery volunteer, and is active in the summer vacation bible school program. She has been a familiar face at the Whetstone Public Library as both a summer volunteer and an asset to the Teen Advisory Board. She has participated as a counselor at the Catholic Youth Summer Camp, the Run the Race Winter Mission Trip, and was a part of the inaugural trip to McArthur, Ohio for the Spring Appalachia trip.
At school, Claire and friends successfully "Filled up the Truck" for Team Fergie to benefit the Our Lady of Guadalupe Center. She is a varsity athlete in both soccer and basketball, president of the sportsmanship committee, a member of the National Honor Society, Senior Leadership Team and Freshman Entourage.
Meghan Connors / St. Timothy
"Living for myself tends to be unfulfilling while living for others has proven to be exciting, rewarding, and enjoyable. That is the value service has brought to my life." Meghan has had many fortunate opportunities to travel to different sites across the world to help those in times of trial and misfortune. In a total of five mission trips Meghan has brought much needed support to areas that often lack basic human resources, including parts of central Ohio and Cranks Creek, Kentucky. In a trip to Guatemala, Meghan saw firsthand the devastating effects of poverty in developing nations and was a welcomed face as she took part in construction projects and directly helped the people of Panajachel. Meghan is an active altar server and Eucharistic minister at her parish of St. Timothy, an assistant to the Vacation Bible School program, a 4th grade PSR teacher, and a member of the Revolution Youth Group. She has also volunteered at the St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen and Kinder Women's Care Center.
At Watterson Meghan stays busy as a varsity Soccer, Cross Country and Track and Field athlete. She is a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and the BWHS social media team.
Elena Ritchey / St. Mary Delaware
"Service to others and the Church is a direct route to paradise with God because we are actively placing others before ourselves." In her time at Watterson Elena has invested over 1200 hours into serving others. A vast amount of those hours can be accounted for at St. Agatha Parish where she serves as a youth group leader, and St. John Neumann where she serves as a Eucharistic minister, 6th grade PSR teacher and small group leader, altar server, and summer middle school camp counselor. This past summer Elena had the chance to counsel middle school girls at the Catholic Youth Summer Camp program. For the past three years Elena has traveled to Cranks Creek, Kentucky with the St. Agatha Youth Group to participate in the Christmas giveaway to those most in need. She is in the process of applying to volunteer at a local hospital as well.
At Watterson, Elena is an active member of the marching, concert and jazz band. She is a member of the National Honor Society and holds a part time job at Chick fil A.

Homecoming Hall of Fame
Ginny O'Connor's first year of teaching in Chillocothe 44 years ago didn't go all that well, she told students at the Homecoming Assembly. In fact, she quit and went home. But then she got a call from Bishop Watterson Principal Msgr. Grimes who needed a math teacher. He asked her if she would help him out by teaching for a year and since she had learned from her parents at an early age that you help when asked, she agreed. Forty-three years later she retired from Bishop Watterson after serving in numerous capacities: Dean of Girls, Assistant Principal, Head Softball Coach, Girls Athletic Director, Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Coach for the girls volleyball program, which she started. This dedication led to Ms. O'Connor being inducted to the Homecoming Hall of Fame for 2015.
"Because of my different jobs, each day was so different, I never knew what to expect. It might be a teacher who needed a test run off, or a student who needed math help, or a discipline problem. I always felt that my job here was to be of service to others," Ms. O'Connor told the students.
"When I walked in to school and saw 'Christ is the reason for this school,' I felt at home and I thanked God that I could teach here. I have been so blessed and so are you for being a student here."

Parents in Partnership Meeting
Monday, October 19
Bishop Watterson will hold its first Parents in Partnership meeting on Monday, October 19 from 7:00-9:10 p.m. Freshman parents are required to attend Parents in Partnership on either October 19 or January 25, but we welcome and encourage all parents to attend these education sessions intended to help you navigate the teen years.
In recent years this meeting was known as Living Life Well the Watterson Way.
Parents choose two 55-minute sessions to attend from the list below.
I Need Your Help, But Please Don't Rescue Me! (Dominican Hall)
Laura Lewis, LPCC, Capital University
Adversity is a bit like exercise - we can't get fit if we sit around and do nothing but if we do too much we will break down and get hurt. Since adversity will strike your teen in high school (and likely already has in life), learn about the benefits of "working out struggles" and what parents can do to help teens bounce back from normal frustrations and setbacks.
Relationships and Dating
Pamela Heil, Youth Minister
Help your teen understand the qualities of healthy relationships, learn how to improve communication in relationships and how to make healthy choices with relationships.
Having Faith Conversations with Teens
Beth Simmonds, BWHS Theology Faculty
Learn the five thresholds of the faith journey and gain practical skill at engaging your teens and their friends in conversations which will invite them along the path of faith.
Parents, Peers and Pressures-Deciding Factors!
(Room 321 )
Dr. Rochelle Dunn, LPCC-S, Gahanna Schools
Adolescents want more fun, more independence, more time with friends, and more control over their daily lives. They do not want arguments with parents, conflicts with peers, social drama, loss of privileges, and adults telling them what to do. Join us as we discuss how relationships, social media, alcohol/drugs, friend drama, harassment, and other powerful influences affect teen's ability to be socially well and how you can support healthy decision-making.
Substance Use and Abuse -What Parents Need to Know
Steve Davis, LPCC, Enliven Counseling
Current adolescent substance use contributes to personal distress, poor school performance, short and long term health problems, relationship difficulties, and involvement in anti-social activities. Learn about trends in alcohol use/abuse, the warning signs, and what to do if you become concerned about your teen or his/her friends.

The bus fee is a $120, non-refundable payment that covers the cost of all six evenings of Ski Club. The bus fee check should be written to Bishop Watterson and turned in to Mrs. Barrett who will then provide an access code to purchase a ski pass.
