BWHS News
College Athletes

Five Bishop Watterson students announced their intent to play post-secondary sports recently.

Left to right - First row: Kalea Thompson, Our Lady of Peace Parish and School, soccer, Seton Hill University; Sydney Simmons, Our Lady of Peace Parish and School, tennis, Ohio Wesleyan University; Second row: Amy Griffith, St. Agatha Parish and School, track and field, University of Dayton; John Pirrmann, St. Brigid of Kildare Parish and School, football, Harvard University; Marissa Wierzbicki, St. Joan of Arc Parish, St. Michael School, soccer, Ohio Dominican University.

"My Catholic education has given me a sense of compassion, fairness and respect for my partners, teammates and opponents," said Sydney Simmons. "One of my favorite traditions is linking our arms and praying before we play a match. It calms me and reminds me that God will help me play to the best of my abilities."

"Bishop Watterson helped me in many ways both on and off the field," said John Pirrmann. "In the classroom the teachers helped me expand my knowledge in all subjects and on the field the coaches helped me develop into a better football player. Both the teachers and the coaches stressed the importance of hard work."

Nine members of the Class of 2015 committed to college athletics in November.

Senior Headed to Carnegie Hall

BWHS Senior Samantha Zelnik has been selected to the 2015 High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, February 22. Samantha will perform as an oboist with the Honors Band, selection to which is limited to the highest-rated high school performers from across North America and select schools internationally.

Samantha has studied music for eight years and is a member of the Bishop Watterson marching band and ensembles. She also performs with the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra, has been selected to the Ohio State University High School Honors Band for the past three years and is performing as first-chair oboe in the Ohio All-State Orchestra this month.

Samantha auditioned for the Honors Performance Series, which annually attracts more than 10,000 nominations, during the fall of 2014. The performance at Carnegie Hall will be conducted by Sharon Lavery.

Social Media Tips for Parents

Bishop Watterson shares a social media or technology tip in our weekly email to parents, the Watterson Wednesday News, and we thought our feeder school parents might also be interested in this information.

Facebook and Twitter are the most frequently used social media sites/apps for parents, but new sites and apps are popping up and young people are always interested in what is new and exciting. Parents who are involved and informed are better able to determine which websites and apps to permit their children to use. With that in mind, we began 2015 with Common Sense Media reviews of some trending social media sites for young people.

Jam Night

Sunday, March 1

7:00 p.m.

3rd annual JAM NIGHT with Station 14

Location: Bishop Watterson High School
(old gymnasium)

Who's Invited: BWHS families and friends, feeder school students and parents

Suggested minimum donation for admission: $5.00

Jam Night is the brainchild of two seniors - now grads - who wanted to have a night of inspirational, contemporary music performed by members of the BWHS Worship Band. The Worship Band consists of student singers and musicians who provide music at BWHS All-School Masses under the direction of Station 14, a contemporary Catholic band that performs at youth ministry events around the Columbus Diocese.

Proceeds from Jam Night go to BWHS Campus Ministry, which plans and implements retreats, schedules speakers, and organizes trips to the Diocesan High School Youth Rally, the annual March for Life and the bi-annual National Catholic Youth Conference.

Come witness Christ's presence through music!
