We Need Your Help!

Looking for Volunteers to help on

December 10 at St. Lawrence Haven

Glenn, a volunteer at St. Lawrence Haven, joins Joe Hill '63, Marri McGouldrick '82  Petrucci Mike Rea '62, and St. Lawrence employee Joe in preparing meals for the daily lunch crowd. We are thankful to these alumni who have committed to help with this service endeavor on a monthly basis.

The Alumni Department continues to provide service at St. Lawrence Haven on the second Wednesday of every month. We volunteer from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On November 5, we prepared and packaged nearly 300 delicious meals.

St. Lawrence Haven is the St. Vincent de Paul-run sack lunch program. The Haven sits behind Holy Cross Church at the corner of Rich and Main streets downtown. Approximately 300 to 500 meals are served each day. St. Lawrence Haven really appreciates our monthly visits.

If you are interested in helping on December 10, or at a future time, please email Terri Kernan at tkernan@cdeducation.org. We would love for you to join us!

St. Joseph of Arimathea Society

Several years ago Bishop Watterson High School began a pallbearer society under the patronage of St Joseph of Arimathea, the man who took the body of Jesus from the cross and placed it in his own new tomb. The group for the 2014-15 school year consists of 18 young men -- juniors and seniors - who have been trained and commissioned for this service of assisting at the burial of the departed. The SJAP Society has a monthly meeting to discuss issues, talk about experiences, and to pray for the faithful departed, especially those whom they have recently served.

Bishop Watterson vs. St. Francis DeSales Food Drive

Student Council's annual food drive has kicked into high gear and the stakes are high! The school that loses must share a video of their students singing the winning school's alma mater. The true winners of this food drive competition will be Our Lady of Guadalupe Center and Holy Family Soup Kitchen, but both schools will earn a dress down day. The catch: the losing school must wear the colors of the winning school.

BWHS has added another motivating element to this competition: Boots and Beards. For a $20 donation to the food drive, students may wear BWHS sweatshirts for the duration of the food drive. In addition, boys who donate may grow facial hair and girls who donate may wear boots.

The collection continues through December 5. Who will win? Let's hope it's the Eagles!

Fall Activities Roundup

We reported in the last issue that our boys golf team finished second in the state of Ohio. Several teams have finished their seasons since that edition of the Eagle Extra.

The boys soccer team won the regional championship, advancing to the state final four again this year.

The girls cross country team took first place at the Columbus Catholic League (CCL) championship meet. In addition, Jessica Passwater, left, qualified for the state meet this year.

The BWHS band qualified for the Ohio Music Educators Association state competition again this year, for the 27th time in 28 years. In addition, our drum line and color guard took first place in their categories at the Thomas Worthington Preview of Champions. At the Mid-States Band Association Contest with 19 schools last weekend our band made the finals and our color guard was awarded Best Guard!

Last Glenmary Mission Trip

Bishop Watterson has been sending students to The Glenmary Mission Farm in Vanceburg, Kentucky since 1983. Our students have had a marvelous mission experience twice a year (fall and spring) working and helping countless people who have come to the Glenmary Fathers for help and assistance. The mission opportunity is a weeklong immersion experience into the hills of Appalachia that has changed he lives of countless Bishop Watterson students for more than 40 years. This fall's trip was the last to that site as the Glenmary religious order recently sold their farm. Staff members are now considering other locations for future mission trips.

Bishop Watterson 101

We encourage our community to know our Bishop Watterson 101  facts so that when an acquaintance, friend or
co-worker is curious or has heard something about BWHS you can accurately represent
the school!

With Thanksgiving in just over a week, we are thankful for the opportunity to provide a Catholic education to our students! We are also thankful for those who contribute funds to assist families with tuition. Current Bishop Watterson students were awarded nearly $1.1 million for the 2014-15 school year, including merit scholarships, need-based scholarships, grants and financial aid. The need is great and we want to help.

During the 2013-14 school year our students earned 624 college credits without ever leaving our campus through the Dual Enrollment program with Ohio Dominican University. This does not include the number of credits they earned through the Advanced Placement exams.

Sunday with Santa
'Tis the Season to join the Bishop Watterson Business Club at our annual Sunday with Santa event! Mark the date on your calendars and join in our mission to help The Christine Wilson '02 Burn Unit at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
