Social Media Tips for Parents
|
We share articles about social media use with BWHS parents each week and thought our feeder school parents might also be interested in some of them.
Kaplan Test Prep recently surveyed college admissions officers about social media use and how much it influences the admissions process.
"The bottom line for students is that what you post online likely won't get you into college, but it just might keep you out." -- Christine Brown, executive director of K12 and college prep programs for Kaplan Test Prep

Eagles vs. Stallions Food Drive
|

In their best effort to raise money and bring in canned goods, the student council, with approval from the administration, came up with a new way to create enthusiasm during our month of giving to our community. Appropriately named, the Boots and Beards Canned Food Drive allowed students to donate $20 and in return they were permitted to be unshaven, wear boots and a Watterson sweatshirt for the duration of the collection.
Maybe even better than having these privileges was the hope of beating their rivalry school, St. Francis DeSales. Each year both schools have their own collection during this time of the year. This year, each week was a competition between the schools. At the end of the week, the totals were shared and the losing school had to record the singing of the opposing school's fight song or Alma Mater and send it to that school to be played for all in the building to see. At the end of the collection, the losing school will have to wear the winning school's colors in honor of their victory. Bishop Watterson won the first two weeks and the final results will be announced on our website and through our social media accounts. Go Eagles!
After only two weeks, our school had a combined monetary donation of $5,352 and canned goods or toiletry donation of 5,064 items. Vice President and senior, Aaron Lucki, said, "We have our annual food drive so that we are able to give back to our community. This year I think that our competition with DeSales has made the food drive fun and will hopefully motivate all the students to donate in some way." In the end the real winners are the food pantries who serve those in need in our community.
Bishop Watterson sure does know how to have a little fun while raising money and awareness in their community!

Save the Date: Parent Workshops
|
Living Life Well the Bishop Watterson Way!
Bishop Watterson High School will hold an evening of workshops on Monday, January 26, 2015, designed to empower parents as they deal with the challenges of raising teens in today's complex world!
The evening will feature five mini workshops facilitated by professionals in the field and discussed in small group settings. Parents will choose three workshops to attend.
All BWHS and feeder school parents are encouraged to participate.
Workshop #1 - RELATIONSHIPS, COMMUNICATION AND DATING
Life is all about relationships with family and friends and on occasion with that someone special. Help your teen understand the qualities of healthy relationships, how communication is essential to maintaining those relationships and how to bring things to an end when it is time to move on.
Workshop #2 - I NEED YOUR HELP, BUT PLEASE DON'T RESCUE ME!
No one wants them, but facing challenges can have big benefits! Adversity is a bit like exercise - we can't get fit if we sit around and do nothing but if we do too much we will break down and get hurt. Since adversity will strike your teen in high school (and likely already has in life), consider joining us to learn about the benefits of "working out struggles" and what parents can do to help teens bounce back from normal frustrations and setbacks.
Workshop #3 - PARENTS, PEERS, AND PRESSURES - DECIDING FACTORS!
Adolescents want more fun, more independence, more time with friends, and more control over their daily lives. They do not want arguments with parents, conflicts with peers, social drama, loss of privileges, and adults telling them what to do. Join us as we discuss how relationships, social media, alcohol/drugs, friend drama, harassment, and other powerful influences affect your teen's ability to be socially well and how you can support their healthy decision-making.
Workshop #4 - TEEN STRESS & ANXIETY: WHAT TO KNOW AND WHAT TO DO
A high school student's identity and self-concept rests in large part on acceptance and affirmation from the people around them. Join us to hear about what teenage anxieties really look and feel like. Learn tools, exercises, and resources you can use at home to help your teen cope with feeling overwhelmed, as well as how to recognize important signs that suggest a need for additional mental and emotional support.
Workshop #5 - NURTURING THE FAITH OF OUR TEENS
Creating an authentic Catholic culture in the family and finding ways to teach teens to live their faith everyday can be a challenge. Interestingly, when teens are asked about the most important influence in their lives they consistently list their parents as the first people they look to for help, guidance, advice and approval. Attend this session to learn more about how to help your teens grow in faith based on the evidence and findings of research conducted by the National Study of Youth & Religion (2001-present).
