National Merit Scholars

Five Bishop Watterson High School seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were announced, based upon their scores on the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). These academically talented seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

Children's Hospital Research Institute Participants

Three Bishop Watterson seniors completed a six-week program at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital this summer. The program, entitled Mechanisms of Human Health and Disease, is geared toward high-achieving incoming seniors with a passion for science. Students were selected for the program through a blind review process of applications and essays by a panel of researchers and physicians.

Congratulations to (left to right) Bridget Geyer, Gino Dettorre and Marissa Wierzbicki, who were among a group of just 27 students selected for the program. Each completed an independent project in molecular pathophysiology. Dettorre graduated as top student in the program, securing an internship at The Research Institute which begins this fall. Wierzbicki finished fourth, qualifying her to receive dedicated mentorship and to participate in the program in 2015 as a teaching assistant.
Handbell Choir New to Curriculum

Handbell Choir is the latest addition to the BWHS performing arts curriculum, offered for the first time during the 2014-2015 school year.  Choral teacher Christen Joyce wanted to offer a different way to experience music and perform in an ensemble setting beyond the traditional choir or band options. So, with the support of the Choir Boosters and BWHS Mothers' Club, she purchased a three-octave set of handbells and materials needed to launch a handbell program

"I had learned to play handbells at my church when I was in high school and continued playing during college," said Miss Joyce. "My only hope was that there would be enough students intrigued to give this unusual class a try. My prayers were answered and this school year began with close to forty students signed up to participate!"

Students started the year learning the proper techniques for holding and ringing the bells. They are also learning music literacy skills such as how to count rhythms and read note names on a musical staff. These are musical skills that they can transfer to any other musical pursuit. One of the unique aspects about participation in a handbell choir is the team effort that it takes to play a piece.

Handbell music is written similarly to piano music in the fact that multiple notes are played at once to create a great depth of sound. However, unique to handbell ensembles, each player is only responsible for performing two notes throughout the entire piece. Great attention must be given to counting and following along in the music in order to accurately perform the piece.

"The students have been picking up on playing techniques very quickly and I am so pleased at the progress they have made!" said Miss Joyce. "I can tell that they are having fun learning how to play these uncommon instruments. When a student makes a break-through in their learning, the results are immediately heard when performing a piece which makes the reward even sweeter (and sweeter to the ear!). Their enthusiasm for learning and playing is wonderful to see."

The Handbell Choir will perform at the BWHS Choral Christmas Concert on December 11th.
Social Media Tips for Parents

We share articles about social media use with BWHS parents each week and thought our feeder school parents might also be interested in some of them.

One of the recent articles we have shared is this one from the Boston Globe about the six biggest sources of digital stress for teens. Click here to read the article.

Business Club Presents Check to Children's Hospital

Bishop Watterson's Business Club presented a check for $3,000 to the Christine Wilson Burn Unit of Nationwide Children's Hospital at the school's Respect Life Mass on October 1st.  Business Club raised the money through bake sales, Sunday with Santa and its first-ever 5K race in June. Also at the Mass, Tim and Pam Wilson, who presented the Christine Wilson Foundation's annual scholarship to an incoming freshman from St. Brendan, spoke of the love Christine '01 had for her education at Bishop Watterson.

In addition, BWHS Student Council sponsored a new- and gently-used book drive for Children's Hospital.
