Alumni Volunteer at St. Lawrence Haven |
Joe Hill '63, Audrey Manahan '13, Rita Ficheria '63, Mike Rea '63, and Alumni Director Scott Manahan packaging meals at SLH. Rachel Kernan '14, Lauren Licata '09, Megan Black '09, and Peggy Black, mother of alums Megan '09 and Molly '13, work the farmer's market at St. Lawrence Haven. The Alumni Department continued to provide service at St. Lawrence Haven over the summer months. In June, July, and August, volunteers from the BWHS community prepared hundreds of meals for distribution at St. Lawrence Haven. In addition, alumni volunteered at the farmer's market, helping to distribute fresh produce to those in need. St. Lawrence Haven is the St. Vincent de Paul-run sack lunch program. The Haven sits behind Holy Cross Church at the corner of Rich and Main streets downtown. Approximately 300 to 500 meals are served each day. The Alumni Department would like to thank the volunteers for taking the time to help us in our endeavor to serve those in need. The staff at St. Lawrence Haven really appreciates our monthly visits. We take a group of volunteers to St. Lawrence on the second Wednesday of the month from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. If you are interested in helping on September 10th or at a future time, please email Terri Kernan at tkernan@cdeducation.org. |

Bishop Watterson is honored to be the temporary home of a zucchetto worn by Pope Pius X. Bishop Campbell, Theology teacher Michael Fry, Principal Marian Hutson, Deacon Chris Campbell and Superintendant Joseph Brettnacher are shown with the zucchetto. As many of you are aware Pius X was Pope around the beginning of the 20th century. The Diocese of Columbus, when they built Bishop Watterson High School in 1954, decided to dedicate our school under his patronage. Last Thursday, August 21, was the 100th anniversary of the death of Pope Pius X and his feast day. To commemorate his 100th anniversary of being born into eternal life with Our Lord, we have on display in our south lobby his actual zucchetto (the white skull cap) that he wore as Pope. It was loaned to us for this year from the archives of the Pontifical College Josephinum. We are grateful to Mr. Fry, Freshmen Theology teacher and archivist at the Josephinum, who acquired it for us to be displayed in our lobby showcase.
