First Annual BWHS Backyard Shindig a Success

A perfect summer evening was the backdrop for our first-ever BWHS Alumni Backyard Shindig. Alumni from many of our classes were treated to a fun evening filled with food, refreshments, friends, and entertainment right in our own backyard.

Early in the evening, guests were entertained by Christian Cottrell '98 of The Fabulous Dance Doctors, while the late shift went to a live music performance by The Dan Tucker Experience, featuring BWHS math teacher and coach Mike Royer on the guitar.

The Smokey Italian provided a wonderful array of menu items including delicious barbecue, Italian sausage, fresh cut fries, and pasta salad. Owner Andy Gay '84 and his team seemed to have something to please every palate. In addition, the BWHS band parents were busy grilling fresh hamburgers and hot dogs for our guests.

Adult refreshments were provided by Superior Beverage, (Jason Golden '98), and Columbus Distributing, (Steve Shoemaker '88).

The Alumni Department would like to thank the many BWHS Alumni and staff members who volunteered their time to make this endeavor possible. We look forward to an even bigger Backyard Shindig next year!

Five Teachers Retire After 2013-14 School Year

At the end of this 2013-14 academic year, Bishop Watterson High School said goodbye to five teachers who have worked here for a combined 148 years and are now retiring: Sharon Alloway, Charlene Ernst, Kim Cannell, Barb Sauter and Helen Ortlieb.

Sharon Alloway has been teaching English, drama and speech at Bishop Watterson for 32 years of her 37-year career. She was the advisor for the spring musical from 1985-2006 and the fall play from 1985-2011. Some of her favorites were Annie Get Your Gun (1987), Our Town (1988), Twelve Angry Women (1994), Godspell (1997) and The Odd Couple (1998). Alloway plans to teach part-time after retiring from full-time teaching.

"I will miss interacting with my students," said Alloway. "They have kept me young. Luckily, I won't have to give them up entirely!"

Kim Cannell has spent 35 years of his 43-year career teaching mathematics at BWHS. He has taught Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Trigonometry, Accelerated Algebra II and Trigonometry and Precalculus. He has directed the annual bloodmobile for 31 years and was director of student activities for about 15 years.

"I will miss the people around BWHS, especially the friendly banter with the students and staff," said Cannell. "I will also miss being a part of the students' growth each year, and enjoying their varied personalities."

Charlene Ernst has worn various hats during her 29 years at Bishop Watterson. For the past 14 years she has been a guidance counselor and prior to that she taught business classes for two years and spent 13 years as the finance manager. During her time here she also served as senior class moderator.

"It has been a blessing to work with so many wonderful Bishop Watterson families!" said Ernst.

Helen Ortlieb has taught science classes at BWHS for 22 of her 24 years in the field. She taught Accelerated Chemistry, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physical Science and has served as the junior class moderator.

"I will miss all of the people that make up the Bishop Watterson family and the interaction with the students," said Ortlieb.

Barb Sauter has served in several capacities during her 30 years at Bishop Watterson, most recently as Service Director. She was also Curriculum Coordinator, Guidance Director and Director of Teacher Evaluation. While she was moderator for In The Know, the team won three local championships and one national championship. She has also served as advisor for the Key Club and St. Vincent de Paul Society.

"I have loved it all and I have been blessed to have been a part of Bishop Watterson for so long," said Sauter. "I will miss my Watterson family, the energy, optimism and excitement of the young and the eternal striving for the better of the education profession."

Marri McGouldrick Petrucci '82, Mike Rea '63, and Rita Ficheria '63, prepare lunch for the clients of St. Lawrence Haven.

 Farmer's Market

Rachel Kernan '14, Lauren Licata '09, Megan Black '09, and Peggy Black, mother of alums Megan '09 and Molly '13, work the farmer's market at St. Lawrence Haven.

In June, volunteers from the BWHS community prepared nearly 300 meals for distribution at St. Lawrence Haven. Volunteers prepared a delicious Italian dinner of spaghetti and meatballs for the clients that would be passing through that week. In addition, alumni volunteered at the farmer's market, helping to distribute fresh produce to those in need.

St. Lawrence Haven is the St. Vincent de Paul-run sack lunch program. The Haven sits behind Holy Cross Church at the corner of Rich and Main streets downtown. Approximately 300 to 500 meals are served each day.

The Alumni Department would like to thank the volunteers for taking the time to help us in our endeavor to serve those in need. The staff at St. Lawrence Haven really appreciates our monthly visits.

The Alumni Department takes a group of volunteers to St. Lawrence on the second Wednesday of the month from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. If you are interested in helping on July 9th or at a future time, please email Terri Kernan at tkernan@cdeducation.org.
