A valedictorian by definition is the student of highest rank in a graduating class that delivers the valedictory, which is a farewell speech. The recent tradition at BWHS is to classify all graduating seniors who have a 4.0 or better cumulative grade point average over four years as valedictorians. Students from this group may audition to be the valedictorian to deliver the valedictory at graduation.

Congratulations to Our 4.0 Scholars

Yearbook Receives Award

The Bishop Watterson High School yearbook staff has been recognized by Balfour Yearbooks for its outstanding contribution to scholastic journalism. The students and faculty involved earned an Honorable Mention Certificate of Recognition from Balfour, which goes out to about ten percent of the schools recognized in the 2014 Yearbook Yearbook.

"To be recognized in YearbookYearbook, a book isn't just good, it's great," director of marketing Mike Cobb said. "Balfour is proud to honor the best in YearbookYearbook. Every yearbook staff receiving Honorable Mention recognition can take pride in knowing that the Bishop Watterson High School 2013 yearbook was great when it came out, and it will retain its relevance 50 years from now."

Balfour Yearbooks is a prominent national publisher of high school yearbooks throughout the country. Based out of Dallas, Balfour receives thousands of yearbooks every year from high schools all over the country.

The award Bishop Watterson High School received for the yearbook is a great honor, and may also serve as a stepping-stone for greater achievements down the road.

 Guidance News

Course Failure Policy and Summer School:  The Bishop Watterson failure policy states that students in all grades must make up all failures in core courses during the summer.  Refer to the student handbook for a list of required subjects by grade level.  Students failing more than two core courses are subject to academic dismissal.  Continue to monitor your son's or daughter's brainhoney account and specifically look up the 4th quarter grade in each class.  If there is a possibility that your son or daughter may not pass a class please first refer to the summer school section of Bishop Watterson's website and then start your research of summer school course options.

Eligibility for Participation in Fall Activities

A student must achieve a minimum 1.0 GPA in a given quarter in order to participate in co-curricular activities.  A student falling below the 1.0 GPA in a give quarter will be ineligible to participate in co-curricular activities during the following quarter.  This means that any student who fails two or more subjects fourth quarter will not be able to participate in FALL athletic or co-curricular activities regardless of whether or not the student passes the course for the year.

AP Exam Test Takers:  Your scores for this year's AP tests will be available in July, 2014.  Using their collegeboard account, students can log on to apscore.org and use their AP ID number to check for the exact date in July that the scores will be available.  Remember, Bishop Watterson does not send AP test scores to colleges.  Seniors should have indicated which college the score(s) were to be sent when they filled out the pre-administration paperwork.

Seniors:

Sending Final Transcript:

Last week seniors filled out a form from the guidance office indicating the college they want their final transcript sent.  In June, after grade cards go out, senior transcripts will be prepared and mailed out to the college they indicated on the form.

Sending Dual Enrollment Transcript:

After the dual enrollment course is complete and grades have been submitted in June to Ohio Dominican University, seniors need to contact ODU directly to have their ODU transcript sent to their college.

Franklin County Farm Bureau Scholarship Program will award approximately $10,000 in Scholarships, with individual awards starting at a minimum of $500.  The applicant or the applicant's parent or guardian must be a member of the Franklin County Farm Bureau.  Selection is based on merit, ability and accomplishments with preference to those majoring in an agricultural related field.  The completed application must be arrive to the selection committee no later than 4:00pm on May 31, 2014.  For application and more information go to www.ofbf.org/counties/franklin/.

The Piave Club of Columbus is offering a $1000 scholarship for a male and female student of Italian descent.  The scholarship is a one-time offering and will be awarded in August.  Students must be in the top 25% of their class and have earned two letters in two varsity sports or three letters in one varsity sport.  Please direct your son or daughter to see a counselor for an application.  Deadline is June 13, 2014.

Scholarship Award Letters: As students receive scholarship award letters from colleges and universities to which they have applied, please have them give a copy to the counselor so they can be recognized for their accomplishments in the graduation program.  Even if your son or daughter is not going to attend the college or university we still need copies of the scholarship letter.

Italian Exchange Program

Watterson to Host TWO Italian exchanges next year

International experience without leaving home

SIGN UP NOW

Watterson now has two sister schools in Florence, Italy and both will be sending an exchange group this fall!  One school will be sending eighteen students from September 12 - 24.  The other school's group of twenty will come in late October/early November.  We are signing up host families NOW.

There is no fee to host and the benefits for your child/children are immense.  The Italian students are fully chaperoned by teachers from their school and speak English so NO ITALIAN is necessary.  In fact, we are actively seeking non-Italian students to take part in the program.

During the exchange, your exchange student will accompany your Watterson student to school and will either go to school with him/her or go on day trips to various cultural, historical, scientific or governmental sights in Central Ohio.  Your Watterson student may go on the trips too if he/she wants.  Your only responsibility is to provide a home, transportation to/from school (and occasionally evening activities) and meals, including sack lunches.  Finally, should you wish, your Watterson student can return the visit to Italy next year - at an approximate cost of around $2,000.00 for two full weeks.

As we all know, the world is a small place these days - and getting smaller. Why not give your Watterson student an "international experience" without leaving home?!  Contact Jim Dury at jdury@cdeducation.org or Italian teacher, Ryan Green, at rgreen@cdeducation.org for more information or to sign up.  Grazie!

BWHS at the Crew

The Bishop Watterson Athletic Department is pleased to announce that both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams will be playing a match at Crew Stadium during the 2014 season.  In conjunction with the Crew, we are having a Bishop Watterson Night on August 16, 2014 for the Crew's match against the LA Galaxy.  We have the opportunity to purchase reduced cost tickets. Click here for details!  See the link to the flyer for details on how to get your tickets through Bishop Watterson.  Come on down to cheer on the Crew and hang out with your Bishop Watterson family and friends
