Bishop Watterson 101

Learn a fact a week to help you stay "in the know" about your favorite Catholic high school!

Bishop Watterson High School, the first coeducational diocesan high school in Franklin County, opened its doors in the fall of 1954. Bishop Michael Joseph Ready not only mandated that the school be established, but also directed that it be named in honor of Bishop John Ambrose Watterson who served as the second Bishop of Columbus from August 8, 1880 until his death on April 17, 1899

Italian Exchange Program - Host Families Needed

As follow-up to the successful annual exchange program with Institution St. Joseph in Le Havre, France and the biennial exchange with L'Istituto Tecnico Commerciale e per Geometri "Piero Calamandrei" in Florence, Italy, the World Language Department will institute a new exchange program this fall with Russell-Newton school in Florence, Italy.  This new exchange will allow Watterson students to host and travel to Italy every year instead of every other year.

The Russell-Newton school will send twenty students (18 girls, 2 boys) to Watterson from October 21st to November 2nd.  The students will stay with Watterson families and attend school with their Watterson counterparts. They will also take day trips to area sites of cultural, historical, artistic, governmental and scientific interest as well as take in a Blue Jackets game and Watterson sporting events. Watterson students will then have the opportunity to return the visit later next year.

Since the group will be coming less than two months into the start of the school year, we are taking requests to host a student for the two week stay now.  If you are interested in hosting and/or going to Italy, or would just like more information on the program, please send an e-mail to jdury@cdeducation.org.  Note that the program is open to all Watterson students.  Knowledge or study of Italian is not necessary to host or go to Italy.

National Honor Society vs. National Society for High School Scholars

Some of you may have received a mailing from an organization calling itself the National Society for High School Scholars (NSHSS) and inviting your son/daughter to join for $60.00.  Please note that this organization is NOT affiliated with the National Honor Society (NHS) chapter at Bishop Watterson. The Watterson NHS chapter is administered by Watterson, not an outside agency, and there is NO fee to become a member. Junior and senior students who qualify for membership are invited to join after the second semester each year. Check the student handbook or contact jldury@cdeducation.org for more information on our NHS chapter.

Uniforms - 2013-14

As we finish the 2012-13 school year and turn our attention to 2013-14, I want to let you know about two uniform changes that you will notice at the uniform stores.

Girls

The shield embroidered on the girls jumpers will be the updated BWHS version we have been using for several years on our website and other materials. Our alum, Jason Janoski '82, designed this shield!

Freshmen will be required to have this shield on their jumpers. If you plan to use hand-me-down jumpers, the uniform supply stores will sell patches that can be sewn onto the jumpers.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors are not required to wear jumpers with the new shield, but we encourage you to do so. For those who purchase new jumpers, the new shield will be the only version available. Patches will also be available for those who choose to replace the old shield with the new.

Boys

polo new logoThe flying eagle used on the boys polo shirts will now be the official BWHS flying eagle. Any new polo shirts purchased will have this new eagle. All freshmen will be required to wear shirts with the new eagle logo, however, next year's sophomores, juniors and seniors are permitted to wear their current shirts.
