West Corridor Progress - Oak Station
By Ryan Mulligan, Feb 15 2013 The Oak Station is located at 13th Place and Oak Street in Lakewood. The area is predominantly residential to the south and east while retail exists to the north with industrial uses to the west. There is a lot of redevelopment potential around this station as large tracts of former retail (abandoned Circuit City store and various car dealerships) sit idle, awaiting their next life.

East Rail Line Progress - 38/Blake Station and 40th Avenue Work
Posted by Ryan Mulligan Written by Robert Wilson, Feb 19 2013 Progress along the East Rail Line has been slow and steady over the winter months. Some significant progress has been on a number of bridges (18 currently under construction). The majority of the work over the winter months, however, has been less noticeable utility relocation work and preliminary construction that will allow for a very busy spring and summer construction schedule on our line out to DIA. READ MORE... TheDenverPost/Editorial RTD's Exercise in Exclusion The Post Editorial Board, Feb 18 2013 We've got no problem with the notion of team-building exercises...But we don't understand why the Regional Transportation District chose a team-building exercise - go-kart racing - that two of its 15-member board could not participate in due to their disabilities. If Streets Are Made for Walking, Walking Is What We'll Do By Andy Boenau, Feb 14 2013
Why did we stop walking? Walking in American cities used to not only be permissible, but expected. In the early 20th century, there was no need for politicking about walkability initiatives in urban environments. The common person could articulate that city streets were home to a wide range of activity, including but not limited to automobile traffic.

An Explanation for the Gender Gap in Biking
By Eric Jaffe, Feb 19 2013
It's no secret that American women are less likely than American men to ride bikes in cities. Some reports put one woman on a bike for every two men in the United States, and some have the ratio at a lady for every three guys. This isn't a universal condition by any stretch of the imagination; in European countries like Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, the split is right around fifty-fifty.READ MORE...HumanTransit
Fare-free Transit Spreading in Europe? Can Cities do This on Their Own? By Jarrett Walker, Feb 19 2013 It's too soon to say, but Tallinn, Estonia (pop. 425,000) is now by far the largest city to offer fare-freefree public transit...Most other free-transit communities are either university-dominated small cities...or rural networks where ridership is so low that fares don't pay for the costs of fare collection technology, let alone contribute toward operating cost. More Urbanites, More Cars: The Challenge of Urban Road Safety & Health
By Benoit Colin, Feb 14 2013
As more and more people move into cities, more cars are also hitting the streets. That, unfortunately, is not all they will be hitting if we do not organize against urban road fatalities. We already see 1.2 million traffic crash-related deaths per year worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, with increased urbanization and motorization, road fatalities are expected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. READ MORE...Street-Sense Walkscore & Taxes: Encouraging Value Creation by Focusing on Productivity Joe Nichol, Feb 14 2013 In the 18th and 19th centuries, many European countries implemented a tax on windows, or a glass tax, as an alternate means to generating revenue (income tax, at the time, was seen as too intrusive to privacy and an infringement on personal liberty). While perhaps politically more viable, it had unintended costs and consequences. READ MORE...

The End of the Neighborhood School By Martin Austermuhle, Feb 19 2013 There's something romantic about the idea of a neighborhood public school. [Note to below: I'm enclosing the full text of one section from a Friday Report from the City of Lakewood because it involves an important built environment connectivity change along the West Corridor adjacent to the West Rail Line.]
Preparing for a roundabout
The City received funding, including a $1 million grant from the state, to build a roundabout at the intersection of Lamar Street and West 14th Avenue and to add a section of sidewalk and bicycle lanes. The work will improve safety at the intersection and provide better access for pedestrians and bicyclists to the upcoming Lamar Station for the West Rail Line. This intersection has an unusually high rate of accidents, and they are some of the most dangerous kind, which are collisions at a right angle. The roundabout will eliminate these kinds of accidents and slow vehicles in the intersection. Properly designing the improvements to match the surrounding area will require collecting land survey information along 14th for 400 feet east and west of Lamar and along Lamar for 400 feet north of 14th to south of West 13th Avenue. The City needs residents' help by allowing surveyors to collect information on their property. Residents with concerns can contact Ken Nyhoff, Lakewood's engineer for the project, at (303) 987-7939/kennyh@lakewood.orgAdded Information. See the short video below
