>The "W" Line Opens
in
180 Days
After almost three years of twice-a-week publications, The Back Fence will be shifting to only once a week later one Nov. 08, 2012. This will allow us to focus more on our cycling & pedestrian advocacy in conjunction with the opening of the West Rail Line and the "final mile" from each station to dwellings & destinations in the area.

By Derek Thompson, Oct 24 2012 Young people are the lazy, smelly scapegoat of the recession. They're not working, they're living at home, they're constantly complaining about their debt, they're not buying cars or houses, and they're not even having babies. TheEconomist
Cities Are Turning Into Vast Data Factories October 27 2012 In 1995 George Gilder, an American writer, declared that "cities are leftover baggage from the industrial era." Electronic communications would become so easy and universal that people and businesses would have no need to be near one another. Humanity, Mr Gilder thought, was "headed for the death of cities". It hasn't turned out that way.

The Best Cities for Green Commuters
By Kaid Benfield, Oct 25 2012
As most readers know only too well, the US pales by comparison to the rest of the world when it comes to getting around by anything other than single-occupancy cars. Please Bring This to America: Heated Bike Lanes
By Emily Badger, Oct 26 2012 While we're still debating in the United States whether and where to build bike lanes at all, here comes yet another cycling innovation from Northern Europe to stoke your seething jealousy. Towns in the Netherlands are hoping to pilot-test heated bike lanes, or geothermal infrastructure at 20,000-40,000 euros a kilometer that would melt the snow and ice from your morning commute.

What Really Happens When a City Makes Its Transit System Free? By Henry Grabar, Oct 26 2012 When Jean-Francois Mayet became mayor of Châteauroux in 2001, the town's transit system was descending into irrelevance.
