West Corridor Progress: Sheridan Station By Ryan Mulligan, Oct 31 2012 Up next in our tour down the West Corridor is the Sheridan Station. This station isn't as accessible right now as the Knox and Perry Stations were due to construction, so we don't have as many close up pictures of the station platform. However, I believe the pictures give a good idea of the set up at this station.

8 Urban Policy Ideas for Obama's 2nd Term
By Emily Badger & S. Mathis, Nov 07 2012 America's cities may not have been a focus of this year's presidential campaign, but the economy certainly was. And all the evidence we have is that our urban areas, where some 80 percent of us live, are the true drivers of our economy. If the next president wants to find a way to jump start innovation and entrepreneurship, consumer spending, the housing market, and yes, the creation of jobs, focusing on policy areas that strengthen America's cities is a no-brainer, regardless of party affiliation. (Or at least, it should be.)

The Urban Electorate: Why Republicans Can't Afford to Concede the City Vote Ever Again
By Sommer Mathis, Nov 07 2012 Now that we know President Obama managed to win decisive victories not just in the Electoral College but also likely in the popular vote, much of today will be spent figuring out what went wrong for the Republican Party, and how they'll need to change their thinking to reflect the country's current demographics and remain competitive on a national level.

The Power of Bicycles in Disaster Recovery,
By Nov 07 2012
We rolled out from the Bicycle Habitat store on Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn just after 10 in the morning on Tuesday, an admittedly ragtag assortment of about 40 people on bicycles loaded down with donations headed for Far Rockaway in Queens. We were pedaling panniers full of flashlights, backpacks jam-packed with diapers and wipes, and bike boxes stuffed with blankets and coats, all of them collected at the Brooklyn and Manhattan locations of the store over the previous week.

Before-and-After Aerial Shots of New Jersey's Destroyed Neighborhoods By John Metcalfe, Nov 02 2012 Scientists have had a couple days now to study Monday's mega-storm that, when it made landfall in New Jersey, was packing more energy than Hurrican Katrina. One of the things they're doing is flying over the East Coast to examine the extent of Sandy' destruction. Using a special remote camera, they're compiling a cartography of misery that illustrates why this storm could wind up costing America an incredible $50 billion

Gas Shortage Underscores NYC's Move Away From Hybrid Cabs By Eric Jaffe, Nov 02 2012 On Thursday my brother and I arrived back into LaGuardia after four days stranded outside New York. We didn't feel particularly lucky, but our cab driver offered a comment that suggested we sort of were: he said if we'd arrived tomorrow - meaning today - there might not be any cabs at all. He said most taxis in the city were running out of fuel. He had just enough left to drop me off and park somewhere and wait.READ MORE... Blogs.WallStreetJournal

'We've Built Right Up to the Edge in the Most Foolish Way' By Sarah Goodyear, Nov 02 2012 As luck would have it, the book sitting on my bedside table when I went to sleep in Brooklyn Monday night - Hurricane Sandy howling past my windows - was The Human Shore: Seacoasts in History, by John R. Gillis. It was published just two weeks ago by the University of Chicago Press, and this review copy had made its way to me, although I had yet to open it. Salon

Malaysia is Planning an Eco-City as Big as Luxembourg By Sarah Laskow, Nov 03 2012 Normally, Singapore is the East Asian country that keeps trying to force us to visit by creating magical green infrastructure. But now its neighbor Malaysia is getting in on the act, too. The country is planning a huge, super eco-friendly city called Iskandar Malaysia, which is supposed to have 3 million residents by 2025. It's also going to be as big in area as Luxembourg. TheHindu Cities Are For Cars Only By M. A. Sairaj, Nov 02 2012 India has nearly 60 cities that have a population of over or approaching a million. Mobility for an average citizen in these urban spaces is emerging as a key challenge. Economic liberalisation has expedited the pace of urbanisation. But given the poor infrastructure and pathetic planning, the urban sprawls tend to be totally unwieldy.

Perfect Match: Metro Vancouver Melds Bikes and Transit. Last month Streetfilms took a look at how Vancouver is making big strides toward becoming a safe bicycling city. As we learned while in town for the Velo-City 2012 conference, the city government is not alone -- it has a great partner in the regional transportation agency, TransLink, which provides transit service for 22 regional municipalities, plus funding for a network of major roads and cycling infrastructure and programs.

[Note to below: I'm enclosing the full text of one section from the recent Friday Report from the City of Lakewood because it involves an important built environment connectivity change along the West Corridor adjacent to the West Rail Line.]
Preparing for a roundabout
The City received funding, including a $1 million grant from the state, to build a roundabout at the intersection of Lamar Street and West 14th Avenue and to add a section of sidewalk and bicycle lanes. The work will improve safety at the intersection and provide better access for pedestrians and bicyclists to the upcoming Lamar Station for the West Rail Line. This intersection has an unusually high rate of accidents, and they are some of the most dangerous kind, which are collisions at a right angle. The roundabout will eliminate these kinds of accidents and slow vehicles in the intersection. Properly designing the improvements to match the surrounding area will require collecting land survey information along 14th for 400 feet east and west of Lamar and along Lamar for 400 feet north of 14th to south of West 13th Avenue. The City needs residents' help by allowing surveyors to collect information on their property. Residents with concerns can contact Ken Nyhoff, Lakewood's engineer for the project, at (303) 987-7939/kennyh@lakewood.org
