Dear Colleague,

Election Results

The Ohio-ACC Governor and Cardiac Care Associate Liaison election results are official.

      • Congratulations to Laxmi Mehta, MD, FACC, who will become Ohio Governor-Elect in March 2014 and Governor in March 2015. Thank you to Joseph Pietrolungo, DO, FACC, and David Stultz, MD, FACC, for their candidacies.
      • Congratulations to Sandra Smith, RN, MSN, CNP, AACC who will now become Ohio-ACC CCA Liaison-Elect and CCA Liaison in March 2015. Thank you to Cynthia Klein, CNP, AACC, and Tanya Verga, RN, BSN, for their candidacies.

Fantastic Year

I would like to thank you for helping to make 2013 so successful for the Ohio-ACC.

  • We had a wonderful annual meeting with more than 140 participants, 45 fellow poster presentations -- not to mention our nationally renowned speakers. Dr. Rick Nishimura presented the 2nd Annual Richard P. Lewis Memorial Lecture.  Take a look at the photos here. Save the date for next year's meeting on October 11, 2014.
  • At our Spring SummitDr. Joseph Loscalzo presented the 50th Annual Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Lecture. The CCA CV Update included fantastic content as well.
  • Our cardiac care associates (CCAs) are very involved and have a council led by current CCA Liaison Anna Broz, MSN, RN, CNP, AACC. The CCAs planned a superb 2013 CCA CV Update and are preparing another great program for April 30, 2014.
  • Our fellows in training have been enthusiastic. They have their own council with representatives from each training institution. The co-chairs are Nkechinyere Ijioma, MD and Muddassir Mehmood, MBBS. You can see our fellows in action in many of the videos on this ACC YouTube series.
  • We have been active with advocacy on a state level. We are working with the Ohio Department of Health on PCI issues. Read about the topic here. Our members have also been involved in AED legislation that is moving through the Ohio legislature. We held a great 2013 Legislative Day and invite you to our 2014 Legislative Day on March 4, 2014.
  • We had the largest contingency of Chapter members at the ACC Legislative Conference in Washington, DC, held in September. Thirty-one Ohio-ACC members attended and learned about key issues impacting the practice of cardiology. Armed with that information, the group headed to Capitol Hill. Please consider being part of the 2014 ACC Legislative Conference.
  • The Ohio-ACC was selected as a chapter for the

Provider Action for Treating Congenital Hearts (PATCH)

project and provided adult congenital education along with a resource list for our members.
  • In partnership with Ohio KePRO and the AHA, we held webinars addressing the principles of the Million Hearts campaign.
  • Finally, I invite you to read the Ohio-ACC year-end state of the state report here.

Feel free to contact me at christopher.cooper@utoledo.edu.

Sincerely,

Christopher J. Cooper MD, FACC

President, Ohio Chapter of the ACC
