ACC Legislative Conference: Attendee Perspectives
William R. Colyer, Jr., MD, FACC |
From September22-24, ACC members from all across the country gathered in Washington, DC, for the annual American College of Cardiology Legislative Conference. Ohio was well represented with the single largest group, consisting of 31 cardiologists, cardiovascular care associates, fellows in training and practice administrators. This group was diverse geographically, as well as in practice type and size. There were many participants who were "regulars" for legislative conference, as well as several "rookies," including myself. Here are photos of the event.
As a first time attendee, I found the legislative conference to be a great experience. First and foremost, it provided a great education about the issues that cardiology is facing as they relate to regulation, reimbursement and the future of patient care. The first day included several speakers who helped us all understand these issues. We were also briefed on active legislation, which we would be asked to discuss with our Senators and Congressmen on the second day of the conference. Day two of the conference began early with a departure from our hotel and a trip to Capitol Hill. Our contingency was able to meet with the staff of a large number of Ohio's Representatives and both Senators. It was really a great opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative process.
As a first time attendee, I can see why there are so many repeat attendees. If you have never participated, I would encourage you to do so next year. In addition to the personal education, it is a great opportunity to help ensure that we can all continue to provide the best possible care for our patients with cardiovascular disease.
Please take a moment to read the perspectives from the other Ohio-ACC members who attended.
Finally, I invite you to view our Ohio-ACC Fellows in Training featured in the ACC "FITs On the Go" youtube series.

| Complete RUC Surveys | |
Surveys will be distributed in the next week related to several echocardiography add-on services. If you are randomly selected and receive a survey, please take 15-20 minutes to thoughtfully complete it. Annual updates to the physician work relative values are based on recommendations from a committee involving the American Medical Association (AMA) and national medical specialty societies, called the RUC. The RUC is an expert panel of the AMA and specialty societies charged with developing relative value recommendations to Medicare. A key part of the RUC process is the completion of relative value surveys. Data from these surveys are used to establish the physician work that determines Medicare payment. Please contact James Vavricek at (202) 375-6421 or jvavricek@acc.org if you have questions.
