Christopher Cooper, MD, FACC

Dear Colleague,

Please join me in Washington, DC, on September 22-24, 2013, at the ACC Legislative Conference. I attended last year, and it was an incredible experience. The meeting begins with a kick-off dinner that includes a high profile speaker (TBA) -- last year's speaker was renowned columnist George Will. The next day you will be brought up to date on all of the critical issues impacting medicine so that you will be prepared to lobby Capitol Hill on the final day.

The Ohio-ACC is offering fourteen $1000 travel stipends for Ohio-ACC members to attend the ACC Legislative Conference. The stipends will be allocated to Ohio members as follows:

* 4 Fellows-in-Training
* 4 CV Team Members (Associate of the ACC, Cardiac Care Associate, or Partners in Care Member)
* 4 Practicing Physicians
* 2 Practice Manager

To apply, please complete the application by June 15, 2013, in order to be considered.

Feel free to contact me at christopher.cooper@utoledo.edu.

Sincerely,

Christopher J. Cooper MD, FACC

President, Ohio Chapter of the ACC

Get Involved: Million Hearts Campaign & Ohio-ACC 23rd Annual Meeting
Laxmi Mehta, MD, FACC
Dr. Laxmi Mehta

The ACC has partnered with the Million Hearts Campaign at a national level, and over the last several months we have begun developing a partnership at the state level.  As you may know, the initiative involves strong partnerships with both public and private sectors.  The overall goal is to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017 by utilizing clinical and community interventions.  This can be achieved with two key aims in mind.  The first aim is to empower people to make healthy lifestyle choices.  The second aim is to improve the care of those who need it by targeting excellence in the "ABCS" by promoting:

Aspirin therapy for at risk individuals,
Blood pressure control,
Cholesterol management and
Smoking cessation.

The community prevention component is targeted to reduce the number of people who need treatment and the clinical prevention component is directed to optimize the care of those who need it.  On a state level, our ACC partnership to promote the Million Hearts Campaign has begun with webinars that are cosponsored with the American Heart Association, KePRO, and the American Cancer Society.  Last month, we held our first webinar on an overview of the Campaign.  Over the course of this year there will be webinars focused on the ABCS.  If you would like to hear more about or get involved with the Million Hearts Campaign, please feel free to email me at Laxmi.Mehta@osumc.edu.

Mark Your Calendar

Also, please mark your calendar for our upcoming 23rd Annual Meeting, October 5, 2013 in Columbus, Ohio, at a new venue for us, Hilton Columbus at Easton.  This year we are pleased to have Dr. David May speak about the future of health care legislation as well as have Dr. Dean Kereiakas and Dr. Daniel Simon debate PCI without surgical backup. Dr. Steven Nissen will discuss the cardiovascular effects of diabetic drugs. Dr. Curt Daniels will address ACHD, and Dr. John Bartholomew will share the latest on venous thromboembolism. We are also honored to have Dr. Rick Nishimura speak about pericardial diseases for the 2nd Annual Richard P. Lewis Memorial Lectureship as part of the annual meeting.

PQRS

PQRS STARTS IN 2013 - OR PENALTIES START IN 2015

In 2015, CMS will penalize physicians who do not participate in 2013 PQRS.  It's time for cardiologists to make an informed decision about how best to begin participating or make some changes to how they participate in PQRS in 2013 and beyond.  The ACC offers a 2013 PQRS Primer to help its members understand navigate new PQRS rules. QUESTIONS? Contact: vbp@acc.org
