Dear Montreat College community,
The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce Paul Maurer, Ph.D., as Montreat College's eighth president. Dr. Maurer has spent his career in higher education as a college president and in senior leadership roles in external relations, advancement and adult and graduate education. We are confident that he is the right person to lead us into our next century of Christ-centered higher education.
"I am committed to the enterprise of Christ-centered education, and I'm deeply drawn to Montreat's mission. This is my sense of call, and I'm pleased to devote my life's work to it," said Dr. Maurer of his new appointment. "I am delighted to join in partnership with Montreat trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends toward a robust future for the College. As Montreat completes its first century of service, the institution will pivot to energetically meet the challenges of its second century of educating students for the common good."
Dr. Maurer comes to Montreat from Gordon College, where he served as the senior vice president of external relations. From 2009 until 2012, he served as president of Sterling College, one of Montreat's sister institutions within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). Under his leadership, Sterling's enrollment grew to historically high levels and the school received its strongest accreditation review in more than forty years.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Maurer has also served at other Christian higher education institutions, including Tabor College, Westmont College and Trinity International University. Dr. Maurer earned his Ph.D. in political science from Claremont Graduate University, where he was an H. B. Earhart Fellow and a John M. Olin Fellow. He earned his B.A. from the University of Cincinnati and his M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
Dr. Maurer and his wife Joellen have been married for 25 years, and have four children: Jon, Liz, Daniel and Sarah.
