Bulletin Bloopers |
Rarely does anyone ever create the Sunday bulletin and then run it by the pastor or a few sanctified editors for things like punctuation, clarity, etc...but maybe we should. Enjoy these old bloopers, maybe some will make you laugh.
- Due to the Rector's illness, Wednesday's healing services will be discontinued until further notice.
- Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa, will be speaking tonight at Calvary Methodist. Come hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa.
- The Rev. Merriwether spoke briefly, much to the delight of the audience.
- On a church bulletin during the minister's illness: GOD IS GOOD; Dr. Hargreaves is better.
- Applications are now being accepted for 2 year-old nursery workers.
- The pastor will preach his farewell message, after which the choir will sing, "Break Forth Into Joy."
- If you would like to make a donation, fill out a form, enclose a check, and drip in the collection basket.
- Next Sunday Mrs. Vinson will be soloist for the morning service. The pastor will then speak on "It's a Terrible Experience."
- Don't miss this Saturday's exhibit by Christian Martian Arts.
- A worm welcome to all who have come today.
- Barbara remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more transfusions. She is also having trouble sleeping and requests tapes of Pastor Nelson's sermons.
- During the absence of our pastor, we enjoyed the rare privilege of hearing a good sermon when J.F. Stubbs supplied our pulpit.
- Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.
- The ushers will come forward and take our ties and offerings.

- Let us join David and Lisa in the celebration of their wedding and bring their happiness to a conclusion.

- The concert held in Fellowship Hall was a great success. Special thanks are due to the minister's daughter, who worked the whole evening at the piano, which as usual fell upon her.

Supreme Court Ruling | |
Just last week, our US Supreme Court ruled that marriage equality is a constitutional right throughout the country. The White House was lit with the colors of the rainbow last Friday night in honor of the Supreme Court's ruling. Sad, unbiblical, but it's now the law. It is also another opportunity to lovingly share the gospel. We are here to reconcile people to God rather than reconcile America to the truth of God, although that would be wonderful. Christianity continues to grow around the world, especially in countries where it is illegal to spread the gospel. Nepal, China, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have the five fastest growing Christian populations (see the top 20 and more). History shows that no laws can stop the spread of the gospel. Although this Supreme Court ruling is disappointing, be encouraged, God is not surprised. In fact, He has privileged us to be here, in this moment, at this time, to be His Church to a world who does not know Him.
"For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ's ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, "Come back to God!"(2 Corinthians 5:19-20)
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:3)
By the way, mark down Tuesday, January 12, 2016 for our very timely workshop on, "A Christian Response to Homosexuality." Details coming soon.
Take Heart!

Survival Youth Festival
Huge Success
On Saturday, June 27, over 110 youths gathered at John Anson Ford Park in Bell Gardens for PCN's Hispanic Youth Festival. The event (a collaborative effort between Stephany Bustos, Ramon Topete, and Joshua Davalos) included a delicious meal, live music, and competitive games as well as the presentation of the Gospel through Pastor David Gloria. This event stirred the hearts of five youths as two rededicated their lives to Christ and three individuals joined God's kingdom. With 12 churches represented, the families that arrived enjoyed the event in good company. Now, the youth leadership eagerly turn their eyes to the upcoming ONSET youth retreat in Mile High Pines this late August. Additional "thank yous" go to Pastor Emilio Núñez and the Bell Gardens Baptist Church as well as all those who volunteered their time, effort, and property for the event.

Classic Church Over Trendy Church | | The Washington Post had an interesting article recently that said: "Recent research from Barna Group and the Cornerstone Knowledge Network found that 67 percent of millennials prefer a "classic" church over a "trendy" one, and 77 percent would choose a "sanctuary" over an "auditorium." While we have yet to warm to the word "traditional" (only 40 percent favor it over "modern"), millennials exhibit an increasing aversion to exclusive, closed-minded religious communities masquerading as the hip new places in town. For a generation bombarded with advertising and sales pitches, and for whom the charge of "inauthentic" is as cutting an insult as any, church rebranding efforts can actually backfire, especially when young people sense that there is more emphasis on marketing Jesus than actually following Him. Millennials "are not disillusioned with tradition; they are frustrated with slick or shallow expressions of religion," Read the rest of the article.

Church in America Survey
Evangelicalism is growing
"Yes, you read that correctly. Evangelical Christianity is growing in America. From 2007 to 2014 the number of evangelicals in America rose from 59.8 million to 62.2 million, according to Pew. While it should be noted that evangelicals' share of the overall U.S. population dropped by 9 percentage points over the last seven years based on denominational affiliation, the percentage of U.S. adults who self-identify as evangelical or born-again rose from 34 to 35% over the same period of time. Don't miss that: More than one-third of Americans call themselves evangelical." Ed Stetzer continues to write that "A new Pew Research Center survey found the Christian share of the American population declined almost 8 percentage points from 2007 to 2014. He says "Fakers who don't go to church are just giving up the pretense."
