With Jesus Now

A good friend and Pacific Church Network board member, John Miller (PJ), passed peacefully at home, with his family by his side, into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ at 4:41 p.m. on February 24. A former youth pastor, senior pastor and interim pastor in many churches, he was a spiritual spark plug wherever he served. He had a great sense of humor and loved our Lord, whom he now sees face to face. Until we meet again, he will be missed.

John's Memorial Service will be:
11:00 AM, Saturday, March 7, 2015

Mapleview Baptist Church

13176 Mapleview Street

Lakeside, CA 92040

The family would love to have you join them to celebrate John's love for Jesus, his love for people and his eternal home in Heaven. There will be a reception at the church following the service. Sharon Miller says, "Thanks to so many of you for your kindnesses, cards, emails, FB posts, food and love extended to our family. We miss John terribly but are confident we will see him again in Heaven one of these days."

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending a monetary gift to one of his favorite organizations:

1. Elizabeth Hospice
https://donate.elizabethhospice.org/form/memorial-donation
This hospice was incredibly compassionate and helpful to the family. They enabled John to be at home with their quick attention to his needs.

2. International Fellowship of Christians and Jews

Click on Donate and then choose the Project "Isaiah 58". This was John's favorite organization and project.

Tradwinds Church Update

Pastor Sean Palmer, pastor of our 2014 church plant in Kailua, Hawaii writes, "It has been an exciting start to 2015 with Trade Wind Communities! We have continued to grow numerically at a steady pace each month both with our adults and our kids. A couple highlights in this area: One of our new families over the past 6 months serve as military chaplains to the Navy SEALS. As a result, we currently have about 4 SEAL families who are a regular part of our church (who also regularly bring their SEAL friends). Most of these families are young in the faith and young in marriage. It has been awesome to see them growing in the ways of Jesus already! It's a pretty cool sight--each Sunday they all sit together toward the front, all these giant muscular tough dudes, standing with their wives, worshiping Jesus. One of our other highlights on the growth front is that we recently had a Sunday where we hit 40 kids in our Trade Wind Kids ministry! Praise God, we have a full team of excited and passionate kids' ministry volunteers who lead our kids each week. In the coming month we are looking forward to a men's retreat that we are taking 15 of our men to, our Easter celebration & outreach, as well as a slight name change as a church! We're moving from Trade Wind Communities Church to simply Tradewinds Church. Easter Sunday will be our first Sunday with our new name!"

New Name in Menifee

In 2008, the residents of the communities encompassing the Menifee area voted to incorporate together to form Riverside County's 26th city. Sun City was one of those communities that became part of Menifee. Over the last few months, FBC Sun City has been in the process of changing their own name. In February 2015, First Baptist Church of Sun City voted to change their name to Valley Christian Fellowship. Pastor Derek Greenhalgh is excited about the new name and the new growth that is happening at their church.

Better Location in Aiea, HI

At our annual meeting in January 2015, we announced that we are now supporting a new church plant in Aiea, HI. Victory Aiea has recently made a significant shift from a Sunday evening gathering to a Sunday morning gathering. They now meet in an elementary school in their community. Pastor Dane Tokushige writes, "We praise God for the favor we have seen in this move. Our facility expense is now cut in half, we have excellent facilities for our kids' ministry, and the school has accommodated us with onsite storage of all of our equipment. We have also been able to begin to develop a relationship with the administration of the school as we will be helping them with various school projects, interacting with faculty, students and parents. This shift has also proven to be helpful as many of our families are now able to attend our Sunday gathering more consistently. We have also seen the addition of a number new families begin attending since the shift."

Donna and Barry Stever with Rob
Smooth Transition in Big Bear

For the last 9 years, Barry Stever has faithfully pastored, part-time, at Cornerstone Community Church in Big Bear City while also working as a hospice chaplain. As of March 2015, Barry has started working full time at the Veteran's Home in Barstow. Pacific Church Network contacted Rob Graham, a Navy Reserve chaplain, to consider leading the church after Barry's job transition. After meeting with Barry, Jim Smith, and the church, Rob was excited to start preaching as of March 1. Rob will also be helping with the hospice needs in the Big Bear area while continuing as a reservist Navy chaplain. Congratulations to Cornerstone for this new chapter in their lives and for the smooth transition.

Joel Webbon
New Church Plant in San Diego

Another new church plant that we started supporting in 2015 is the Response Church in San Diego. Pastor Joel Webbon of  the Response Church writes, "Things here at The Response Church are going exceptionally well. In the last six months, we have had 13 baptisms which makes for a total of 22 since we first planted the church. On April 19th, we will be installing our third elder here at the church, and this summer we plan on doubling the size of our leadership team. We are currently averaging about 80 people at our Sunday evening gatherings. Out of that 80 people, approximately 60 are involved in our Gospel-Communities throughout the week. We anticipate substantial growth in the fall. Thanks to the support of the PCN, we are able to realize our goal of having a Sunday morning service. We just got approved by the San Diego school district to hold a 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning service at Silvergate Elementary School starting the first week of September. We could not afford to do this were it not for the support we are receiving from the PCN. By the end of this year, our goal is to have a total of 150 people in average Sunday attendance as well as being able to celebrate 15 more baptisms. Thank you so much for affirming what Jesus is doing through The Response Church. We are so grateful for your prayers and financial support."

Mike Brown
New Pastor in Burbank

On Sunday, March 1, Cross of Christ Church (formerly Valley Baptist) voted unanimously to accept Mike Brown as their next pastor. Six months ago, Cross of Christ Church gave Pacific Church Network the responsibility to find the next pastor for this church. Our Church Multiplication Director, Brian Howard, served as the interim pastor and led the church in a name change, a new constitution, and now a new pastor. Mike served as a missionary in Mexico for several years and then planted Soma Church in Burbank seven years ago. The big kick off will be Easter Sunday, April 4. Congratulations!

Cudahy
Encouraging Training Days
Pastors and leaders of all ages gathered in Cudahy and Upland for two days of training, encouragement and fellowship.

Sharpening Your Sword
On Saturday the 28 of February, the Spanish-speaking churches had a seminar that focused on some basic interpretation principles of Scripture that enhance and deepen the study and communication of God's Word. Approximately 110 people attended the seminar offered by Leadership Resources Inc., and sponsored by PCN. Craig Parro and Patricio Paredes led classes that were interactive and very well received by all in attendance. It is this type of equipping that PCN is doing with all the member churches who participate. Dr. George Chakarji and the support teams from Bell Baptist Church made the sister churches from PCN feel very welcomed. We are grateful for all of their hard work.

Avoiding Burnout
Upland
The second training day (in English) was held on March 3 in Upland, hosted by San
Antonio Heights Community Church--also the location of the PCN offices. Pastor Daniel Montgomery of Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, KY led the training on "Avoiding Burnout and Leaving a Legacy." The participants appreciated the training as well as the opportunity to fellowship in conversation and in prayer. If you weren't able to attend either of these events, we hope you will be able to make it to our next training days coming in May.
Book Available by PCN Pastor

Jason Cusick is a pastor at our PCN church, Journey of Faith, in Manhattan Beach. His book, "Read Me Like a Book - Using Hermeneutics as a Guide to Pastoral Counseling," is now available to pastors and seminarians looking for ways to enhance their pastoral counseling ministry.

Many pastors feel overwhelmed and ill-equipped to deal with the counseling issues in their congregations. But pastors are actually better equipped for counseling than they realize. Hermeneutics, homiletics, pastoral care, and counseling all share a common foundation in the field of "interpretation." With this book, pastors can learn to interpret people with the same expertise they use to interpret Scripture. Read Me Like a Book offers a simple, practical, and theoretically sound approach to help pastors leverage their exegetical skills to improve their pastoral counseling. Read more about Jason's book here, and find it available online here.

Chaplains get an Encouraging Law

PCN supports the CBAmerica Chaplaincy ministry. At times our chaplains have been limited on how much they can share about the Bible, God and faith to others. Last year, the National Defense Authorization Act of 2014 was signed into law. CBAmerica Director of Chaplaincy, Andy Meverden, writes that the NDAA14 "specifies and codifies into law that both the religious freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights (First Amendment), indeed, apply both to service members and their chaplains. It also directs the Inspector General to survey service members and chaplains over a specific period to verify whether such violations have occurred, and is to present to the DOD and Senate and House Armed Forces Committees a report on their findings in 2015. It reinforces current law and puts the Department of Defense on notice that Congress is watching enforcement of religious freedom in the armed forces, for service members and chaplains, alike. The latter concerns relate to the ways chaplains pray in non-religious settings, and to ensure that chaplains are not coerced into performing any services that are against their religious convictions, to include same-sex marriages, and to ensure that refusal to perform such services does not reflect negatively in a chaplain's evaluation, promotion, or utilization."

Pacific Church Network K-Club meets twice a year with church leaders from churches near or over 1,000.

7 Ways to Ruin a Good Talk

Carey Nieuwhof is Lead Pastor of Connexus Church north of Toronto, Canada and wrote an interesting article in ChurchLeaders on making your communications skills better. With these seven mistakes, he gives some helpful ways to fix them. He writes, "If  you've ever spoken in front a group, tried to motivate a team or if you prepare messages almost every week like many of us do, you've probably wondered what makes for a great talk. What's the difference between a merely good message and incredibly great message? What's the difference between a sermon that changes someone's life and one that no one can remember even as they drive out of the parking lot? If you're like me, those questions might even bother you. I hope they do. They haunt me. And yet every week gifted communicators kill the messages they bring by making at least seven predictable, fixable mistakes. The good news is that once you identify the mistakes, you can address them.

No Longer Just a Fad

Ed Stetzer

About three-fourths of online adults are on some form of social networkingThis means that for the sake of the gospel and the mission, your church needs to have a voice there as well. Social Media is the New Town Square.

Throughout history, people of all generations have gathered in town squares-public spaces where the local community gathers for social and commercial purposes. In the old days, it used to be a literal "town square," and it still is in some places. Until social media came around, town squares were shopping malls and other social areas. Social media is the 21st century town square.  read the rest of the article

Pray For Their Families

Sources: Voice of the Martyrs

The Christian community in Egypt is in mourning after 21 Egyptian Christians who had moved to Libya for employment were brutally murdered. A video makes it clear that the men were targeted because of their faith. Additionally, a caption in the video describes the victims as "people of the cross, followers of the hostile Egyptian church."

The believers had been kidnapped around the Libyan city of Sirte in separate incidents during the months of December and January. On January 12th, the Libyan branch of ISIS released a statement that they were holding the Egyptian men in captivity. (For more information about these abductions, you can read a previous prayer alert.) The murdered Christians came from villages in Egypt's central Samalut region in northern Minya. This region suffers from high poverty rates due to a lack of job opportunities, causing many inhabitants to move to other Arab countries in search of work. Pray that His peace will greatly comfort them during this difficult time of tragic loss and that His healing will be ministered to their wounded hearts. Please also remember in prayer the many other impoverished Egyptian Christians working in Libya, asking the Lord to protect and sustain each one.

Spring Forward

Daylight Saving Time Begins March 8th

Set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed on Saturday night. Your smart phones, computers and other digital devices should change automatically, but your microwave and other clocks won't. And while you will get one hour less of sleep on Saturday night, you get to start enjoying an extra hour of daylight in the evenings!
