Practice Hospitality
The Apostle Paul wrote, "Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality." Romans 12:13. Some days present great opportunities for practicing hospitality. This past weekend, my wife and I were given some of those opportunities. Thursday night we had invited our music team from the church over to our home. Tonight, Sunday, my daughter Ashley texts us at 8:30 p.m. that their vacation plans changed and their family needs a quick free overnight at our house on their way to Phoenix. Ok! No problem. But we did have our other daughter, Emily, and her three boys staying overnight as well because she is recording a song on Monday with some people, and had a friend's baby shower this afternoon after church.  So we took care of the two toddlers after our morning at church while she went to the baby shower. Earlier this morning, we said goodbye to our son, Andy, and his wife as they took off for church early to set up chairs. They had called us on Friday, while we were up in Big Bear painting our son-in-laws house, to say that they were dropping in on Friday and Saturday night since they were going to do a day trip up in LA! We loved seeing them. Tomorrow, our daughters and their families leave just in time for us to get ready for the ministry teams from church to come over on Monday night. It is great to have a home that we can practice planned and unexpected hospitality opportunities for our family and friends, and then enjoy some time alone. Here are a few thoughts on hospitality:

It's always hospitality time.
Expect the unexpected.
Open your home as often as you can.
Do it as if you are doing it for the Lord.

Church Plant Moving to Valencia
Sam Ticas is the Pastor of our Pacific Church Network church plant named SOMA. The new church first starting gathering in the afternoons at a church in Santa Clarita, CA. Wanting to meet on Sunday mornings, they began searching and praying for the right location. Recently, after months of looking, they just got approved to gather on Sundays in a neighborhood elementary school in Valencia. Sam writes, "we've been hanging out on Friday nights at the school park to create community, and meet neighbors. We want to be a blessing to the people who live around there and introduce them to Jesus through relationships and through our Sunday Gathering. We are looking to launch a public gathering of the church in early September."

Let 5 Minutes Save Your Life
Leaving 5 minutes early just might save both your life and your relationships. Pacific Church Network's Church Multiplication Director Brian Howard writes on his blog, "I drive a lot. I drive my teenage kids to school, drive all four of my kids to various activities, drive to appointments daily, and drive my family to our church gatherings. But we often run out the door at the last minute (or a couple of minutes late) on the way to these activities. I have learned that there are two big problems with running out the door at the last minute:"
A Chaplain's Long Journey
Jon Uyboco is nearing the completion of one chapter in his life and getting ready for the next one, as he recently got assigned as a Marine Chaplain at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. Jon, who is married and has three children, finished his tour in the Navy and then wanted to pursue his dream to become a military chaplain. After being accepted into CBAmerica's chaplaincy program, he had to finish seminary and be involved in church leadership. Jon recently finished his Masters of Divinity at Talbot Seminary, and in June, he completed his work as the Interim Pastor at San Antonio Heights Community Church in Upland. The next step was to be accepted by the Navy as a chaplain and complete all the governmental requirements. With that completed, the long wait continued until this month when he received his first assignment at Camp Pendleton. We thank Jon for his interim work with Pacific Church Network, congratulate him on his appointment as a Navy Chaplain and pray that his ministry as a military chaplain will be fruitful for the glory of God.

Persecution in Iraq

Christians in Iraq, and especially those from the city of Mosul, are enduring yet more hardship and persecution because of their faith. The militant group called the "Islamic State" (previously known as ISIS), which is presently in control of Mosul, summoned Christian leaders to a meeting on July 17th to notify them of Islamic rules that are to be applied to non-Muslims. When the Christian leaders did not attend this meeting, it was announced that the remaining believers in the city should leave, pay a "protection" tax, or face execution. The Christians were also ordered to leave all of their property behind. The ultimatum was initially set for noon on July 18th, but was then extended by 24 hours. Earlier, the Islamic State (IS) sought the takeover of houses belonging to members of minority communities by marking them with the phrase "property of the Islamic State" -- including homes that were still inhabited by families. Christian houses were marked with the letter "N" for "Nazarite." It is believed that most Christian families have now fled from Mosul, many to areas of northern Iraq under Kurdish control. Some fleeing families were reportedly stopped at checkpoints manned by IS militants who ruthlessly confiscated their personal belongings...
