June 2014

WELL DONE AND THANKS.

June is the beginning of summer, but it also seems to be the early start of our fire season. Many also have or will graduate from high school or college and move on to a different type of life. It is quite an accomplishment to graduate--all those tests, hours of reading, studying, listening to lectures, writing papers and doing homework. Well done. And, remembering what I saw as I drove through San Marcos the other day through the burnt hills surrounding so many still surviving houses, some who also deserve lots of recognition are the firefighters and law enforcement officers who kept the peace and fought the fires. Thank you for battling the flames through lack of sleep and long hours, hiking though dangerous hills to protect lives and property. Thanks to the helicopter and plane pilots, Marines and Navy personnel who fought the fires. Thanks also to teachers. To Fathers in honor of Father's Day, thank you. Thanks to dads who stay with their wives and families. Thanks for being there, setting an example, being strong, fair, compassionate. The list is long, and I could go on. We should, as the apostle Paul wrote, "
Give recognition to such people." 1 Corinthians 16:18 ESV

Take time to recognize and thank someone this week.

PRAYER REQUESTED
Pastors would appreciate your prayer

Pastor Paul Taylor of Montebello Christian Fellowship would appreciate your prayers for his wife, Kelly. She has been experiencing some extreme, and still uncertain health issues resulting in lack of strength and energy. Paul has been working through doctors, insurance issues, caring for his 5 kids, hospital trips and more. His church has graciously allowed him to focus on being the primary caregiver at home since Easter. Paul and Kelly pray for an accurate diagnosis so that she can get proper medication and improved health.

Pastor Brian Anderson of Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo has experienced some serious kidney issues. He has been in the hospital for several dialysis treatments. He still has a kidney problem, but his kidneys are 'alive.' Brian wrote in his blog, "The remaining issue is the 'gaps' or openings in the cell membranes which have yet to heal. In other words, even though my kidneys are 'alive,' they still 'leak' (to use my doctor's words). But praise God that there are signs the prednisone treatment is working. The prayer now is for continued improvement and the healing of the 'gaps' in the cell walls." Pastor Brian is scheduled to be back in the pulpit June 1.

Thanks for praying for both pastors.

NEW PASTOR FOR SAN ANTONIO HEIGHTS
Starts on Father's Day

San Antonio Heights Community Church in Upland has asked Jim Smith to be their next pastor. Jim has been involved in church ministry for 35 years and enjoys the local church. He has had a close relationship with this church for the past 4 years, as they host the offices of PCN. The search team spent nearly 10 months praying, going through resumes and interviewing. PCN had helped them connect with Jon Uyboco, who served as their interim pastor. Jon will become a Navy Chaplain this fall. On May 4th, Jim wrote on his facebook page, "Today I have accepted the call to be the Senior Pastor of San Antonio Heights Community Church in Upland while continuing my responsibilities of Executive Director of Pacific Church Network. I love being a part of a local church and Vicki and I are excited to be working with this wonderful church family."

PCN Training Event at SAHCC
VERY PRACTICAL TRAINING
"Between Sundays"

On Tuesday, May 20, close to 70 men and women came to San Antonio Heights Community Church to hear Jeff Vanderstelt and Shaun Garman talk about reaching people for Christ "between Sundays." Shaun shared the inspiring stories and pictures of people in his life/church who have come to Christ through their interaction with Christians living out the gospel in their everyday lives. Jeff dynamically shared how Christians should do life in three areas: life on life, life in community and life on mission. We can use the activities we already do in our lives to interaction with others in a missional way; listening, getting to know people's stories, blessing them, celebrating with them, and helping them recreate. Those who attended were overwhelmingly positive about the training. Don't miss our next training event.

SUMMER HISPANIC YOUTH CAMP
ONSET, SEPT 5-7

SOUL CARE FOR CHURCH PASTORS
"Take Time for Yourself"

There are so many options to fill our days and we are running fast, working hard, addicted to noise and activity, and as a result we rarely stop to even consider the state of our soul - or how those around us are doing at a heart and soul level. Centered around three core spiritual disciplines of contemplative bible reading, prayer, and reflection, the purpose of a soul care retreat is to tend to and declutter our internal space. Cornerstone Pastors Network invites you to take a "soulhealth day" specifically designed for pastors to renew your soul. The day will be led by Steve Macchia and Rick Anderson from Leadership Transformations. Cost is $49 in advance, $59 at the door, includes lunch and all materials.

BISHOP AND MONTEBELLO
Active Women's Ministries

Vicki Smith, Pacific Church Network's Women's Ministries Director was invited to speak at two events last month. On Saturday, May 3, Montebello Christian Fellowship held a one-day workshop called, "An Appointment with the King." Then on the weekend of May 16-18, Calvary Baptist Church of Bishop held a retreat in the beautiful mountains where Vicki spoke on, "A Weekend in Proverbs." Vicki wrote, "It is so exciting to share the Word of God and watch women make serious decisions to meet with God and grow wiser each day! The women of these churches had a true burden to give their ladies an opportunity to get away from regular life and spend hours in saturating themselves with God and His Word!

CHURCH PLANT IN HAWAII
Trade Wind Communities

Sean Palmer, Pastor of our church plant in Kailua, HI, wrote about their Easter celebration. "We had a great Easter celebration this year. We had over 100 people at our worship service and resurrection party that followed afterward! The exciting thing for us was that Easter marked the first time that people who we don't have any relationship with showed up and have continued to stick around! Most of our growth up to this point has been through networks of relationships of people within our church. So usually when someone new comes to worship with us, they are a friend of someone in our church. But we got a good-sized group of people who just came as total strangers on Easter through word-of-mouth and our website. It's been so exciting!..... I am so grateful for your continued partnership with Trade Wind Communities! It is incredible to watch all that God has done and continues to do, as we follow Him! God has moved through your prayers and financial support in big ways as this church is forming."

IRREPLACEABLE
Sold out theaters

Crowds packed out 723 theaters coast to coast as the movie "Irreplaceable" premiered on May 6 to a total audience topping 97,000Many showings in the "one night only" event sold out - in Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Seattle, St. Louis, and Fresno and Santa Monica, Calif.,  among other cities. As a result, dozens of theaters offered an encore presentation on Thursday, May 15. "We rejoice in these sold-out theaters not because it represents a marketing or PR success for us - but because every seat sold was filled by a real person who God loves," said Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family. "Irreplaceable," the first theatrical film production from Focus, follows New Zealand father Tim Sisarich to a half-dozen nations on a search for answers to why family, marriage, and children matter for the future of society. This was the first in a series of studies on the family. You can purchase the study guides here.
