Austria Evanglicals
Many missionaries and evangelicals are excited about the official recognition of evangelicals in Austria last year. Christianity has been considered a "cult" since the 1500's. Five "branches" of evangelicals formed an organization to seek recognition. A membership of 0.2 % of the total population of Austria, i.e. approx. 17,000 persons, is required for becoming a recognized church or religious society.

New Year's Resolutions

According to a recent survey, over half the population make New Year's resolutions. The top three for 2014 were: lose weight, get organized and spend less/save more. During the Christmas break, my family and extended family gathered around the piano at my daughter's house and sang some songs, from old hymns to Beatles' songs. We had a good laugh when we changed one word in the lyrics of an old Beatles' song, "Across the Universe," in honor of my mom. Instead of singing "nothing's gonna change my world" we sang "nothing's gonna change my mind." My mom will probably never like rock and roll, but she did smile a bit.

Change, however, is always happening and nothing is gonna change that world. Here we are in a New Year, our association has a New Name, and we hired some New People to help start New Churches. We are excited about these changes and hope you will join us as we partner together to help change the world for Christ. I read a book by Andy Stanley called, "Preaching for Change." It was a helpful book and one that reminded me that preachers should always try to change the lifestyle of those listening. The Bible demands that we change. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Cor 5:17) "I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed" (1 Cor 15:1) "Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think." (Romans 12:2) Desiring to improve or change for the glory of God is what we all should attempt to do through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our change won't be perfected until we get to heaven, but be open to those changes that God wants to make now, while we are here on this planet.

Happy New Year,

Pastor Hugh McMenamin Moving On
Vista

Pastor Hugh MeMenamin announced early in December that he would be resigning at the end of December from Valley Bible Church in Vista. Hugh has been considering some other ministry options for several months and felt the time had come to leave. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hugh McMenamin, pictured here with his wife, Cindi, has pastored, preached and taught biblical truth for over 20 years, all in the environment of Southern California. Cindi is a published author and national conference speaker. Their daughter, Dana, just graduated from California Baptist University. Associate Pastor Andy McAdams will be preaching until a new pastor is found.

New Baptisms in Hawaii
Tradewinds Communities

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, our new church plant, Tradewinds Communities in Kailua, Hawaii, baptized 5 believers. Pastor Sean Palmer is the one with the hat. The woman in the picture is named Samantha, a young, single mom who came to Christ this summer through her neighbor Stephanie and the church. Stephanie, the young singles leader who moved to Oahu from Portland, OR to help plant the church, was stoked to be able to help assist in Samantha's baptism! Disciples making disciples, right here in action!
Tony Pezzotta Update
From His Wife, Zita

Thank you for prayers, e-mails, cards and phone calls. They are an encouragement and a testament of God's wonder-working power to those who love Him. I rejoice knowing God is the one giving me strength, grace and courage to go on in spite of the everyday challenges we face together.

It is consoling that though Tony is slowly deteriorating physically, yet his mind is clear, and he understands many things around him. His appetite is very good, and he likes anything you give him--but his favorites are desserts. I always joke with him that he better eat and enjoy all the ice cream he wants because there's none of that in heaven! LOL! He is completely immobilized, any bodily movement makes him uncomfortable. The most aggravating of his conditions is the almost inability for him to communicate. These days he is quiet and sleeps most of the time. Yesterday, while holding his hands, I sang to him some Christmas Tagalog songs, bring him back to many good Christmas memories we had as a family.
Ordination Completed
Roy Fondren

New Song Community Church in Oceanside held an Ordination Council on Monday, December 16 for Roy Fondren, who attends New Song and works as an active volunteer at the church while serving as an Officer in the Marines. For 3.5 hours he answered doctrinal and ministry questions from a council of ordained men, moderated by New Song's Senior Pastor, Dr. Hal Seed. New Song will pubicly acknowledge Roy's ordination at their church in January. Roy plans to become a chaplain in the Navy following his duty with the Marines.

Dennis Mohler
On Sunday, December 29, Dennis was ordained by Calvary Baptist Church in Whittier during the morning service. Dennis had completed his Ordination Council held with several pastors from other Pacific Church Network churches along with his Senior Pastor, John Ploog. Dennis has served in youth ministry and cross-cultural mission work in Mexico. He also worked in the aerospace industry and as a consultant for telephone and network systems for universities and medical centers before joining the staff as Pastor of Administration at Calvary in 2006.

Contact Pacific Church Network for information on ordination. We can assist and equip your church through the ordination process for your candidates.

Before You Fire Considerations
by Rick Watson
Rick is the Director of Administration for Next Generation Churches, our partner church network in Northern California. He wrote this in their last newsletter. If you have questions, please email Rick.

The issue of limiting employment based on religious grounds is likely to come up at some time.

While the general rule is that an employer cannot make hiring and firing decisions based on religion, there is an exception for "religious organizations." The legal system is very protective of church autonomy and generally does not interfere with church hiring and firing practices. Federal law exempts churches and allows them to consider an applicant's religious beliefs in hiring for all positions. And under most state laws, religious nonprofit organizations are entirely exempt from these regulations.

But nevertheless, there are things an organization should do to protect its ability to make hiring and firing decisions based on religion. First, churches need to stay true to their religious mission. Some ministries, over time, lose their religious mission and just become focused on doing a task. For example, some religious schools stop integrating church doctrine into the curriculum, and thus may lose their status as a religious organization under the law.

Second, religious organizations should provide job descriptions in their bylaws for every position in the church and explain in the job description how the position furthers the religious mission of the church. These position descriptions should include the religious grounds for limiting employment opportunities - especially if the limitations involve other legally protected factors, such as race, age, sex, or national origin.

For example, if the church's beliefs require that only certain positions be held by men, this should be stated in the bylaws with support from Scripture. This firmly establishes that there is a religious basis for the church's limitations on employment, and is unlikely to be questioned by a judge.

Finally, churches should ensure that they are consistently applying their employment rules to protect themselves from claims of employment discrimination. Churches must handle similar cases similarly and cannot use religion as an excuse to treat a protected class of people more favorably than others. For example, a church might be vulnerable if it terminated an unmarried, pregnant female employee on religious grounds based upon an inference of illicit sex, but did not terminate a male pastor guilty of extramarital sexual relations.

Today would be a good day to take a look at your bylaws and make sure they adequately protect your church.
