EasterMarch/2013

Fans
My wife and I went to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Monday morning right after the Academy Awards to see a live taping of the "Kelly and Michael Show" (used to be "Regis and Kelly"). We had to get in line with our free tickets at 1:30 a.m. at the Hollywood Bowl, along with thousands of others, to check in, then sit in a bus for an hour, which
then drove the five blocks to the theater, so we could stand in a line again for several more hours. I was amazed at how many people were there in the middle of the night with their free tickets to see this show.
We met people who drove all day from San Jose and Modesto, and one flew in from Texas. The taping lasted one hour, 6 to 7 a.m., since it had a 9 a.m. east coast starting time. I was glad I went. I made it to work filled with good memories and coffee.

What amazed me was the time, effort, lack of sleep, hours of standing in line and expense so many people were willing to spend in order to see and hear a TV show for one hour without much complaining. While waiting around for hours, I thought of those times people complain about so many things about churches. Churches try to make worship services comfortable, engaging, relevant, Biblical and convenient, and yet, people still complain. These fans demonstrated devotion, appreciation, support and willingness to sacrifice in order to see the co-hosts, Kelly and Michael. No problem was too great to overcome in order to have a short time in a theater with 3,000 other people. They didn't even shake our hands at the door afterwards. How much dedication do we demonstrate in order to worship and honor our Lord? On Easter we celebrate our Lord's love and willingness to sacrifice for us. I have observed that no matter who you are, we all have it in us to "worship" something or someone to quite an extent. Let us all put into practice our willingness to show our devotion, appreciation, support and willingness to sacrifice for Christ all the time--in our church attendance, giving, witnessing, serving and enjoying the company of other believers. We need to be die-hard fans of Jesus, similar to those I saw. Real fans do way more than just sit around.

Have a great month, and don't forget our Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 3. Also, it's Easter month already, with Easter on the last day of March. Here is a great link for some good ideas on Easter.

Thanks for reading our newsletter!

Church Plant called "Seed"
Seed publicly Launches on Easter
shaun
After "Seed" outgrew a local team member's house, Pastor Shaun Garman couldn't speak from the living room around the corner into the chair-less dining room! The kids were meeting in a breakfast nook. Seed decided to take their next faith step and rent a warehouse space for Sundays and one weeknight usage. When they met for the first time in their new warehouse in Ventura, California they had about 50 adults and 15 kids. Their core group is now meeting throughout the week in private homes in Ventura and Oxnard. They have people coming to Christ for the first time and many returning to Him! Additionally, they are launching their first ministry, Hope Rising, which is already serving up to 40 women from the sex industry/trafficking. Pray for their public launch on Easter, March 31st!
Getting Known in the Community
Canoga Park in LA
Pastor Larry Maib of First Baptist in Canoga Park, over in the San Fernando Valley, was inspired by a question he heard..."What would your community miss if your church wasn't there anymore?" He started praying for opportunities to do more in the community which might lead to a greater chance of sharing the gospel. He found several opportunities. They adopted a local school with an after school program called "Child Evangelism Fellowship." He called the school principal and she was more than happy to have them lead this program once a week. Any organization can hold an activity, but CEF is currently the only one at the school, and they now have 50 kids that attend once a week. Larry also met with the town officials where he learned of the city's need to find a new location to stage their Memorial Day Parade. They wondered if FBC would allow them to use their parking lot! Larry enthusiastically said, "yes." Answered prayer. It's a start, and a good one!
Free Breakfast Outreach
San Marcos, North San Diego County  sam
Pastor Sam Brummit of the new CB church plant Mission 316 hosted a free breakfast for everyone in San Marcos. They put up posters and had their members invite everyone they could to come to the community center on Sunday morning between 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. for a free breakfast. During the breakfast, Pastor Sam arranged for five short segments of songs and a short 5-minute message. Since the community center is where they meet for church, they invited all their guests to return the next week. Volunteers and donations from church attendees covered much of the cost. Approximately 50 students from the high school contributed by serving, and they all did it with such great attitudes. Pastor Sam said, "About 400 came in for breakfast! One woman came and was not aware that we were a church. A member witnessed to her and she finally said, 'my kids won't believe it...I am coming to church next WEEK.' A prayer room was open and many prayed with us throughout the day. Three hundred burrito meals were prepared and distributed to the less fortunate at the end. One young woman accepted Christ as her Savior which made it all worth it."

Interim Pastor
Sun City and Fallbrook
While they are looking for their next senior pastors, two CB churches found interim pastors to help them during this transitional season as they prepare for their futures. John Miller has been the interim at FBC Sun City since January 2013 and Jim Smith has been the interim at Fallbrook FBC since October 2012. Interim pastors can help churches evaluate, refocus, heal, solve problems, and prepare for the calling of their next pastor. In addition, this transitionl leadership can help bring continuity to the ministry and maintain positive growth in the church.
Pastor Loses Wife to Cancer
Marco and Blanca Cueto
Marco and Blanca Cueto were a wonderful team as they led their Spanish-speaking church in Santa Ana called Iglesia del Buen Pastor. With all of their kids in ministry within their church or other churches, you can see the godly influence they had on those around them. Blanca had battled with cancer off and on over the years, but the Lord brought her home to be with Him earlier in February. Our hearts and prayers go out to Pastor Cueto and his family.
Howard Hendricks Dies
Home with the Lord
Many of you probably know that Howard Hendricks died early Wednesday, February 20th, after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 88. His funeral will be Saturday, March 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at Stonebriar Community Church. If you don't him, Dr. Howard G. Hendricks, known simply as "Prof," directly or indirectly touched millions of lives in the evangelical community and beyond. For more than sixty years Prof served on the faculty of Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), where he taught more than ten thousand students. He also ministered in person in more than eighty countries. Through speaking engagements, radio, tapes, films, the sixteen books he authored and coauthored, countless journal and popular-market articles, his service on numerous boards, and his work as a chaplain to the Dallas Cowboys (1976-1984), his reach was and is worldwide. His legacy, in partnership with Jeanne, his wife of more than sixty-six years, includes four children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
