Merry Christmas
Wow, here we are again at Christmas time. With November having 5 Thursdays this year, and Thanksgiving falling on the 4th Thursday as usual, we have an unusually long "shopping" season. For me and most of my family, shopping season is done. We had our gift exchange on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, since our daughters and their families will be at their in-laws on Christmas. Vicki and I will enjoy the Christmas season even more this year with the shopping completed early.

Vicki and I are in Manila this week, attending the CBGlobal meetings. Leaders from CB churches in Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and others will be with us. During the meetings, we will vote on accepting the new region, CB Central America, into CBGlobal. I am privileged to represent this new region which has seen missionaries from Missions Door (formerly CB Home Mission Society) establish 350 churches. They now want to join CBGlobal and continue to work together to plant even more churches. CB Philippines will also be celebrating their 50 years of existence, and we will be among the 8,000 people attending this huge celebration as well, bringing greetings from America. We then stop by our CB church in Guam to speak on December 2 before heading home. It is exciting to see new churches being planted around the world and how we are able to partner with them.

As Christmas draws near, CBSC has been blessed with an early gift in that our new Church Multiplication Director search has been completed. We are looking forward to announcing and introducing the new director to you at the upcoming Annual Meeting in March. He will be speaking at that event and embarking on his new adventure with us in June.

Merry Christmas,

Jim Smith

Annual Meeting coming March 3 2012 annual meeting
This year's CB Southern California Annual Meeting will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Huntington Beach for all CBSC churches, both English- and Spanish-speaking. If you were with us last year, we lost power and met in the dark. We are returning this year with hopes of a brighter meeting. Among many items, we will be voting on our constitutional changes, articles of incorporation and new board members, along with announcing plans for more aggressive church planting efforts. Plan on attending.

March 3, 2013
3:45 pm - 8:30 pm
Dinner will be provided.
Constitutional Changes Discussion

web logoThe board of CB Southern California has extended an invitation to anyone who has questions about our CB constitutional changes. We have adopted the CBGlobal Statement of Faith and changed the preamble and the job description of the Executive Director. Each CB Pastor has been mailed notification of these proposed changes for review. Please join us on Wednesday, December 12 at 11:00 am at the San Antonio Heights Community Church in Upland, CA. The address is 2520 North Euclid Ave, Upland, CA 91784. We will provide a light lunch, so if you could RSVP that would help with our lunch preparations.

Interesting Thoughts on Christmas

What do people think the modern day Christmas is about? In a survey conducted by ComRes on behalf of Theos in October 2011 the following results were obtained:

  • 83% agreed that Christmas is a about spending time with family and friends
  • 62% agreed that Christmas is a time when we should be generous to people less fortunate than ourselves.
  • 41% agreed that Christmas is a about celebrating that God loves humanity. 24% disagreed with this.
  • 40% said Christmas is a good excuse for taking time off and doesn't really have any meaning today but 34 % disagreed with this.

Parking Needs in Perris
Pastor Ray Grignon started as the Senior Pastor of Temple Baptist in Perris in September 2009. Since then, they have seen steady grow. With the English service hovering around 300 and two Spanish services, they needed more parking space. They just raised $35,000 toward a parking lot expansion and even had the City Manager and City Councilwoman in attendance. They both pledged toward the project. Many have been baptized over the past year and they are looking forward to reaching more people for Christ.

To Give a Raise or Not

When it comes to raises, you have to make hard decisions. These decisions are in real time, not in the electronic world of a fantasy football league. You are discussing the economic livelihood of people who you will be seeing for the foreseeable future.

Here are some of the operating principles that I use in determining raises:

  • Be as generous as possible. "People are your business." Love your people by paying them as well as you can.
  • Have a salary grid for every major role in the church. Set a minimum and maximum salary for that role, with three points in between.
  • If a staff member is below your minimum point for the role he or she is in, then raise their salary to the minimum point. If they are far below that minimum point, it may take two years to get them to your minimum.
  • If someone is over the maximum salary according to your salary grid, then don't give them a raise. Give them a bonus instead. Examine your salary grid on a regular basis to ensure that it is fair. Don't pay someone more than what you have determined is the fair maximum amount for that position.
  • Offer a newcomer a salary based on your salary grid, setting the exact amount based on experience, qualifications, maturity and similar qualifications.
  • Separate "needs" from "work." Have a benevolence fund to help staff with unexpected medical expenses.   Don't pay people more because they have more kids or because they get married. Pay people based on their work, whether single, married, divorced, childless or "Israel with 12 sons."
There are many other principles that I use in determining salary. These are some of the salient ones. Be generous in your salaries. "People are your business."

Dr. David Beal's homegoing
Dr. David P. Beal, Sr. (1923 - 2012), died late Saturday afternoon, November 10, in Hospice of the Valley, Sun City, Arizona. His daughter Rebecca wrote.... "Dad loved the Conservative Baptist Association, and served as pastor in many CBA churches in Arizona: First Baptist, Winslow; First Baptist, Nogales; First Baptist, Tucson, and First Baptist, Tucson, where he served as an associate pastor with his dad, Dr. R. S. Beal, for over ten years. While he loved Arizona, he also served long tenures at pastorates in California--Apple Valley Baptist (1969 -1978) and Palm Springs Baptist Church, before his retirement." Dr. Beal's life was celebrated in a memorial service on Sunday, November 18, at Grace Bible Church in Sun City, Arizona.
