I was recently interviewed by Huffington Post regarding men over 50 and erectile dysfunction. I know about this issue having been trained as a sex therapist and also because I just turned 50. Men become frightened when they lost some ability over getting and maintaining an erection so I offer some ideas on how to cope.
To read the article titled Sex Over 50: 3 Ways Intimacy Changes For Post 50 Men Beyond Erectile Dysfunction click here
I was also quoted in the current issue of US Magazine with Tiger Woods on the cover addressing sex addiction.
And to start your summer off with a better relationship I am offering my couples weekend workshop again June 8-9, 2013.
And finally, what a great month March was as the Supreme Court began listening to arguments in favor of gay marriage. I truly never believed that in my lifetime I would be able to be legally married. Having been with my husband for 20 years I think it is time for us to stop living in sin, don't you?
Have a great April and enjoy the beginning of Spring.
Warmly,
Joe Kort, Ph.D., LMSW |

Teleclass: Pornography: Healthy Sex or Addiction? |
A Teleclass Series with Joe Kort, Ph.D.
You can be live on the call or receive the audio of the class sent directly to your email.
4 Week Teleclass
April 30-May 21, 2013 Every Tuesday 12:00 PM ET $150 for all four weeks
Open to mental health professionals as well as the general public
- Is porn affecting your life?
- Is porn ruining your marriage?
- Can porn ever be something positive in someone's life and in marriage?
- Are you a therapist struggling with how to help a client or couple work out issues of porn use and abuse?
- How do you know when porn is an addiction?
The ease of access to porn has caused unquestionable harm to some individuals and couples and can feel just as threatening to a marriage as infidelity does. Some women say that finding out their husbands look at porn is like finding him in bed with another woman. For the men looking at pornography, they may be addicted and compulsive and replacing their spouses with internet porn.
At the same time, porn use may satisfy many individual needs, unrelated to psychopathology or sexual dysfunction. In this teleclass, we'll discuss how to help individuals and couples face the crisis when one partner discovers that the other is secretly using pornography. You'll learn how to help identify when it is an addiction and when it is not, explore its significance to the user, and define limits. Finally, we'll talk about helping the spouses understand what is going on and develop empathy and validation for themselves and their partners, ultimately creating a more differentiated sex life.

New article on Huffington Post: Is it Easier to Come Out to Mom or Dad? |
I purposely use the term, "come out" because when a child comes out of the closet, some parents immediately go into the closet with the secret that they have a gay child.
Another father made the news in support of his gay son in March in the Advocate in a reprinted a letter which went viral and was posted on an equal rights organization FCKH8 Facebook page.
I feel emotional reading this letter from a father to his son and hearing how Magic Johnson led the conversation in a very warm and supportive way to his son. These young gay men are lucky to have these fathers. Their very open and accepting position as fathers is crucial for gay sons mental and emotional well-being. Click here to read entire article. |

Emotional abuse is an ongoing relational dynamic that perpetuates a "one-up" mentality for the abuser and a "one-down" for the victim. This dynamic perpetuates a contemptuous and toxic atmosphere that may easily escalate to other forms of abusive behaviors. This workshop will address the complex etiology of emotional abuse, the family system dynamic it creates, and strategies for intervention that address the root causes of the behaviors. This workshop will also address safety factors, and long term relational recovery.
This workshop addresses social justice by helping to facilitate more egalitarian family systems.
This workshop will use a combination of PowerPoint, lecture, discussion, case study, video, and role play.
Please call the office at 248-399-7447 to reserve your spot today or click here to register online.
