I remember going to the store with my dad to get a loaf of bread.  Dad was usually always working so he rarely went shopping for anything. I still remember how shocked he was to find the price for bread was 21 cents!  How things have changed!  Fifty years ago, the Beatles had just hit America and yes, I got yelled at for having long hair.  I REALLY wanted Beatle boots -  just like lots of boys across America.

Some of you may remember these local celebreties from the old days:  J. Akuhead Pupule, the real Hilo Hattie, Lippy Espinda, Lucky Luck. Alfred Apaka, Arthur Lyman to name a few.

Here are some other trivia from fifty years ago:

Average income: $3,960
Ford car: $1548-$2415
Milk: $.92
Gas: $.21
Bread $.17
Postage stamp: $.03

Beatles and Rolling Stones appeared on Ed Sullivan

TV Shows:  Munsters, Bewitched, Addams Family, Flipper,
Top Movies:  Mary Poppins, Goldfinger, My Fair Lady
Top Singles: Baby Love (Supremes), Can't Buy Me Love (Beatles), House of the Rising Sun (Animals), Pretty Woman (Roy Orbinson)

Wishing you a very Happy and Prosperous 2014!  -
