Here comes
Santa Claus!

Growing up, our family usually had a very simple Christmas holiday.

The plantation generously allowed their employees to cut down one
pine tree from their property for their family.  Dad would go deep into the forest to get a really nice one for us. We had fun decorating the tree - don't know if you remember those old lead icicles that were popular back then.  Each icicle had to be draped individually by hand. Imagine - who knew they were toxic!

Grove Farm Plantation Company always held a Christmas party in the community hall for employees and their families.  I remember one Santa looked suspiciously like one of my friend's father but didn't dare blurt it out loud!  Each child got a bag  from Santa that included an orange, apple, some nuts and colorful Christmas candy.  These items were really special since they weren't grown or made in Hawaii. So different from what kids expect from Santa nowadays!

We would pour over the Sears catalog (the Christmas Wish book) all year long - hoping for that new bike or the latest toys - this was way before there was Toys 'R Us and the internet.  We usually ended up getting some much needed clothes and a toy or two.  I realize now that Mom and Dad worked very hard to make extra money for our gifts. I appreciate those gifts more now than I did back then.

We didn't own a TV so it was a challenge to behave until midnight on Christmas eve, waiting till we could open our presents. Didn't know how Santa delivered the gifts either, none of the plantation camp homes had any chimneys!

Enjoy this holiday season with your family.  Make great memories to last a lifetime! - Myron

RECIPE OF THE MONTH:

HOT APPLE CIDER
2 quarts 100% apple juice
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 apple, unpeeled and cut in half
1 small naval orange, unpeeled and sliced into 1/4-inch slices
2 tsp. whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1/2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg

1/2 tsp. allspice

Directions

Carefully insert the whole cloves into the apple on both the flesh and skin sides. Heat apple juice over medium heat in a large pot or dutch oven. Once heated, add the brown sugar and stir to dissolve. Add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a simmer and let simmer for 15 minutes. Promptly remove the apple halves, orange slices, cinnamon sticks and any clove remnants from the pot.  Serve hot. Enjoy!

(Make it a Hawaiian cider! I wonder what it would taste like if you added some pineapple spears!-Pam)
