HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE MONTH

Aumakua - ow mah koo ah
Family god or guardian spirit

In Hawaiian mythology, an Aumakua was often a deified ancestor.  Some families had many aumakua that also included plants, places, rocks, animals.  For more, check out:

Halloween - Island style

Halloween in a plantation camp was great as a kid!  Kids in the "camp" really didn't have money to buy store-bought costumes. We didn't dare cut up mom's sheets to make ghost costumes, so instead, we did the "traditional" paper bag on your head look.  There were lots of kids with the same idea!  Perhaps that was the best costume because you couldn't tell who was who because we all looked alike - ha ha!

I LOVED Halloween because we got to have all the goodies we wanted!  The treats weren't the usual store bought candy, but it was even better.  Families gave out their own delicious ethnic home made treats. Our camp was predominately made up of Japanese, Portuguese and Filipino families

Here's some of the things that were given out....
The Filipino families gave us:
Bibinka:  a sweet rice cake
Cascaron -
sweet rice cake on a skewer covered with a sugar glaze
Bitsu bitsu: sweet potato fritter

The Japanese families gave out:
Age potate:  Sweet potato
Chi chi dango:  sweet rice cake
Andagi:  deep fried round donuts

The Portuguese gave:
Malasadas:  donuts (no holes) covered with sugar

On Halloween night, the camp would be alive with kids running from house to house! We would eat the goodies as we got them.  It was a different time then, we didn't have to worry about being escorted by our parents or afraid to eat the home made sweets.

After getting our fill of goodies, we did the usual crazy kid antics. I won't elaborate on all the harmless "humbug" we used to get into with water balloons, etc, etc. that were part of the Halloween fun.....(which we hoped our parents wouldn't hear about!!)
RECIPE OF THE MONTH:
Witch Hat Cookies

Here's a simple recipe that the kids will enjoy making:

ingredients:
Keebler Fudge Stripe cookies
Hershey Kisses
Orange frosting
Make it:

Turn cookies upside down. Squeeze a large amount of orange frosting on each cookie; top with a Hershey Kiss. Let harden.
