GRILLED HAWAIIAN

Ingredients

Directions:

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Spread butter onto one side of each slice of bread. Place up to 4 of the slices of bread, butter side down in the skillet. Top each piece with one slice of cheese, two slices of ham, and about 2 tablespoons of the crushed pineapple. Place remaining slices of bread on top with the butter side up. When the bottom of the sandwich is golden brown, flip sandwiches, and cook until browned on the other side, about 1 minute. Repeat steps with remaining ingredients if all four sandwiches do not fit in your skillet.

         THE TERMITE PALACE
As a kid growing up on Kauai, our parents used to take us to Honolulu (on Oahu) to do our back to school shopping. It was such a special treat when they would also take us to the Honolulu Stadium to see a Hawaii Islander baseball game.  AAA baseball was the biggest thing back then...

We were little so to us, the stadium was a gigantic! (It was actually pretty small by today's standards.) Being from Kauai, we were amazed at how many people were in line to get in.  There were people everywhere!  Outside the stadium were street vendors selling bags of boiled peanuts. We too got in the long line to get our own brown paper bag full of peanuts to take inside. Once inside, I thought all of the people on Kauai could fit in that stadium!

The stadium was a wooden structure that over the years became infested with termites.  (Thus the nickname - The Termite Palace)
As you can imagine, during those warm summer evenings,
termites swarmed everywhere.  The stadium lighting had "halos" of termites around them.   The fans would just ignore the bugs- it was part of it's "charm" I guess.   With the termites flying around the lights, and the excitement of the game, we would enjoy our bag of boiled peanuts.  Hawaiian boiled peanuts are THE BEST.  They were chilled and we would slurp up the salty "juice" to get to the peanuts.  Peanut shells would pile around your feet and were everywhere!

There was nothing like enjoying a game with termites flying around and a bag full of peanuts! - Myron

Note:   The Honolulu Stadium opened in 1926 and held baseball and football games, stock car racing, polo, boxing, and a concert performance by Elvis.  check out:  http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/150/sesq6honolulustadium
HAWAIIAN ROYALTY
Hawaii is the only U.S. state that was once a kingdom with its own monarchy. The only real royal palaces in the United States are in Hawaii. King Kamehameha I united the islands and established the kingdom of Hawai'i in 1810.

The Iolani Palace was completed in 1882, during the reign of David Kalakaua, the last king of Hawaii. It had electricity years before the White House did. The last royal to live there was Kalakaua's sister, Queen Liliuokalani, who abdicated in 1895 after the overthrow of the monarchy. In 1898 Hawaii was annexed by the United States, and in 1900 it became a U.S. territory. On August 21, 1959 it became the 50th American state.   For a list of Hawaii's kings and queens, royal news from Hawaii, books about Hawaiian royalty, and more, visit:
