FISHING FOR
BLUE GILL

Behind my cousin's house was a huge reservoir that was used to irrigate the cane fields. To get to the reservoir,  we had to cross over a narrow stream. The "bridge" over the stream was actually an old fallen tree trunk.

We would fish with small poles made out of bamboo that we cut and made as straight as possible by heating the knots and bending the pliable bamboo.

For bait we would dig worms from a nearby bamboo patch or from the vegetable garden and put them into an empty Campbell's Soup can.

And just like serious, seasoned fisherman, we carefully tied the fishing line in a special way so in case the tip of the pole broke, the line would still be attached to the pole (BIG FISH).

My cousin and I would spend hours at the reservoir, fishing for blue gill or hoping for a wayward bass.  When we got bored we would skip stones across the water or go swimming until we got tired.

Eventually, we would pack up our catch and head on home.  My mom would cook them up or sometimes we would save a few and keep in a bucket for bait to catch bass...and that would be in anticipation for another day fishing (BIG FISH)! - Myron
HAIKU FARMS MINUTE (Monthly update on the rebirth of our family farm on Kauai) shack

The weather here for the last two weeks have been terrible = windy, heavy rains and COLD! Too dangerous to work under the trees. Fencing work on the farm had to be pushed back until good weather comes.  We'll be starting more papaya seedlings soon.
