POINT OF INTEREST: SNOW IN HAWAII
It snows in Hawaii only at the very summits of our 3 tallest volcanoes (Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala). The snow level almost never gets below 9000 feet in Hawaii during the winter, but since these mountains are taller than 13,000 feet, 13,000 feet, and 10,000 feet, respectively, they get dusted with snow a few times a year. It rarely stays on the ground for more than a few days though. http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/ASK/hawaii-snow.html

DAYS OF MY YOUTH - Growing up on Kauai
Myron Kashima
DEAR SANTA....
Long before there were Toys R Us stores, we loved the old Sears catalog. At Christmas-time, we would flip through its pages and dream of getting all kinds of toys.
Our toys were made from what we had...bamboo stalks were made into rifles and cannons, guava sticks were made into sling shots. Our play structure was the strong mango trees that we climbed that rewarded us with fresh fruit. We made "walkie talkies" with empty Orange Exchange tin cans and string. We raced down grassy hillsides sliding on scrap pieces of cardboard and blew bubbles using mom's dish soap and the hollow stem of a papaya leaf...
I remember wishing I had a brand new bike with a light so I could see better at night but I survived with what I had. Even though my rusty bicycle was made from parts from the dump, I learned how to be resourceful and work with my hands to put things together to make it work.
Half the fun was making our own toys and seeing whose invention worked the best. We were inventors and creators, engineers and test subjects all in a single afternoon. Yes there were duds and we laughed until we had a sore stomach. Looking back, some were downright dangerous, lucky no one got hurt. The best part of our "toys" - nothing required batteries!
Have a Merry Christmas! Myron

HAIKU FARMS MINUTE (Monthly update on the rebirth of our family farm on Kauai) Well, our MONSTER is back. Ti-leaves were flourishing and for some reason, it gets to a certain height and the monster comes back. It's now digging down to the roots after big rains. It has also gone to the papaya trees and doing the same thing. Hopefully the new year will be on our side to continue and move forward.
More news next month. - Clarice
