In a recent newsletter, I asked that you tell me what keeps you up at night, and I'm thankful some of you took the time to respond. I want to take this opportunity to update you on some of our workforce efforts and initiatives since that was something I heard from many of you.
For about a year and a half now, we have been an active participant in the Poweshiek Visioning Group - a group comprised of educators, school administrators, community college representation and business and industry professionals. This project has been spearheaded by POW I-80 and Iowa Valley Community College, and we are thrilled to be involved to help relay information on behalf of many in our business community.
The group has met regularly to help identify positions that are hard to fill, determine the skills and training that is often required for these positions and from there are working on action steps to help employees and students navigate careers within our community. The group has identified 'career pathways maps' which allow potential employees to better learn the steps and/or training needed to navigate a career within a certain industry. Oftentimes when talking with business owners, we hear that employees are lacking soft skills (or people skills). Our group is working to identify ways we can better educate students about what it means to be in the workforce, what employers are expecting from them and ultimately give students more opportunities to explore different companies in our region before they graduate. We know from assessments conducted by the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship that approximately half of young people picture themselves living in, or returning to, their hometowns if quality career opportunities are available. We are working to help students realize the opportunities that currently exist, and working with employers to help identify and implement positions that these students will ultimately find compelling enough to return to Grinnell.
As with much of our work, it's a long process. But I believe we have many folks involved with this group who will help us identify the best course of action for sustainable long-term growth, and allow our students to return to our vibrant community. --Rachael Kinnick
