Earlier this week our staff and a few board members attended the Iowa Chamber of Commerce Executives (ICCE) one-day conference to learn more about the Horizon Initiative developed by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. The Horizon Initiative outlines influences facing chambers of commerce over the next several years. Organizations like ours can vary greatly between communities, but one thing remains the same: our communities and organizations are ever-evolving-and have to be-as we face new trends and influences that will ultimately affect every chamber of commerce in some way. That got us thinking about the future of our organization and community. There are some very exciting things happening here, and yet we still face challenges, including rapidly changing communication and technology, how people feel connected to their community, and population shifts to more metro areas. Our organization is in a unique position to act as a facilitator between businesses, community members and government. We are genuinely interested in helping our community become stronger by connecting people to each other, assisting businesses with a variety of needs to help them be successful here, and working with local officials and agencies to continue our community's forward momentum. We recognize we cannot do our work without the involvement of community members, so I'd like to hear from you. What is your favorite thing about Grinnell? As you are visiting with friends or visitors, what is the one thing you have to tell people about our community? And as you think about Grinnell and the future of our community, what is something that keeps you up at night? --Rachael Kinnick
