High school perspective

Earlier today, I spent a couple hours listening to presentations from a bright group of economics students at the high school. Their final project of the trimester was to write a marketing plan for a Grinnell business. Their teacher, Todd Crites, asked if my husband and I would like our business, Gamers, to be the test subject for the students' plans this year and we were quick to agree.

Last Monday, we gave the class an overview of our business and issued a marketing challenge to them: develop a plan for getting more high schoolers and more parents into our store downtown. In less than two weeks, six small groups presented their final recommendations to us. Their ideas are invaluable to us as a small business. While listening to their presentations this afternoon, I was struck by the creativity and variety of ideas each group pitched.

While it was no shock to me that every group touched on social media and digital marketing, I was surprised by how many of them suggested our business be supportive and involved in community events. This tells me that those high schoolers value community events and even take notice of the businesses who help make them happen. So I want to give a shout out to all of the Grinnell businesses that contribute so much to our community. Whether it's sponsoring a festival, an athletic team, or a charity, businesses play a role in supporting every aspect of our community. Thank you to all of you who give your time, talents and resources to making Grinnell an active, vibrant community. Your support does not go unnoticed. Even our high schoolers are taking notice.
