What's Your Connection?
It's interesting to think about what it is to be a community. The way the stars all line up to gather people in a particular place, for one reason or another. And then the way those people interact with each other and how they collectively go about caring for a place, making it go. What they do and how they make it go defines a place, unique to all other places on the planet over time. It is also interesting how few people you know that are actually native to the place they choose to call home now - few Grinnell residents and business owners have lived here their entire life.
I moved here four years ago to work at the Chamber. I had just graduated college and was so excited to start my career. I packed up and moved to Grinnell, convinced that I'd be ready to move on and try something new after two years. Well, four years later and I'm still here! My role at the Chamber has evolved quite a bit during that time, and I still enjoy it very much. Since moving here, David and I have gotten married, opened Gamers, and bought our first home. We're both transplants, but we now consider Grinnell 'home'.
Yesterday, I posted a question on Facebook asking when you moved to Grinnell and what brought you here. The responses give glimpses at the impression our community has made on people over the years. The comments also say much about what community means and how very extraordinary this little city is. Click here to see the thread of comments on facebook. Please add your own story to the comments - if you don't facebook, you're welcome to email us your story.
