Our favorite things, tied up with string

Do you know what's really cool about small cities? You can really make a difference. You can have a seat at the table, get busy and change things. Same goes for local spending. Just one purchase made locally instead of a larger city or online goes a long way in making a difference for a local restaurant or retailer. One of the things that has kept me up most at night over the last six years is reducing our downtown vacancy rate. We're doing really well downtown with an almost unheard of vacancy rate of 4%. I absolutely get the entertainment value of going to the city. I also understand completely the sense of relief of going shopping where no one knows you or wants to yell at at you in the dairy section of the local super market, but even one vacancy feels big here. Retailers, service providers and restaurants in a small city aren't just places where you trade dollars for things you need or want. They are a what make our town a neighborhood. They are who and what bring vitality to our downtown and give us character as a city. They are also the people serving a meal at church or putting a little extra in the basket on Sundays to help out those in need. They write checks to help the animal shelter stay open and support very other charity in town.

These are a few of our favorite things...
