When you travel to a new city, how do you find your way around? Finding places is often a visitor's biggest frustration. Frustrated visitors spend less time and less money in a community and they are much less likely to come back for repeat visits. People just don't have the time or patience to drive all around town looking for something.

That is why we are so excited that a wayfinding sign system is being be installed in Grinnell. You may have noticed the new green signs appearing along Highway 146 and Highway 6. They match the new signs that were installed in city parks earlier this summer. All of those signs will be at work assisting travelers in Grinnell 24/7.

A couple years ago, I worked with a Chamber committee to begin the process of implementing a wayfinding sign plan here in Grinnell. We identified the top attractions, amenities and public services to include on the signs, and then we spent quite a bit of time driving around town and determining routes to take to each destination.

The City of Grinnell and Tourism Committee took the next step in hiring a firm to design a branded family of signs. The first wave of signs is currently being installed along the two highways, with more signs planned for the future.

Wayfinding is part branding, part education, and part improving the visitor experience. These new signs will help people have a better experience in our community. They will educate visitors, as well as locals, about what assets we have here and where they are located. And they complement our community branding efforts.
