I started doing food and retail tours with first year Grinnell College students recently. I wish I could spend a whole day with them as we just barely get started and they have to get back to class. I have to tell you that our food scene in Grinnell is really impressive. Think about it. In the last few years we've added The Fix, Solera, Prairie Canary, Candyland Station, The Purple Cucumber, La Cabana, McNally's deli, Frontier Cafe and Pizza Ranch. All fantastic additions. They join Grinnell icons like Pagliai's, Lonnski's, Relish, Chuong Garden, West Side Family Restaurant, Michael's, Grinnell Steakhouse, Montgomery's Sandwich Shop, Dari Barn and The Depot.

We are so lucky to have them. It's something that makes Grinnell really stand out amongst our peers. As margins in the restaurant industry shrink, we need to think about ways we can help our restaurants grow their business. Soon, you'll see new billboards (pictured above) on the interstate telling those 30,000 cars every day that we have 37 restaurants. We're also working on an event center project that will use Grinnell dining operators as caterers.

I could really use your help in getting more traffic to restaurants right now, today, to their doors. As people rely more and more on navigation systems, Google, Siri, Trip Advisor, and Urban Spoon to make restaurant choices while they are traveling, we all need to make a conscious effort to help those restaurants be loud enough online for potential customers to hear. PLEASE go online, rate your favorites and write reviews. It would make a huge difference to those businesses and to our local economy. We're starting to work on a 'best of Grinnell' list. What's your favorite thing to eat at Grinnell restaurants? Let us know and it might make the list.

I took these Grinnell College students on a food and retail tour around Grinnell last week. They were all impressed with the food samples we had and they discovered some stores they're looking forward to visiting again.

The Chamber Ambassadors did a ribbon cutting earlier this week with Ballyhoo In Ink, located on Commercial Street. They do all sorts of customized printing and can help you out with personalized gifts of all sorts from cutting boards to ornaments to fun coffee mugs to tshirts and pillowcases. Pam and her team can print on just about anything.

We also did a ribbon cutting at Jeld-Wen's new Customer Support Center this week. The international company has two primary Customer Support Centers for their entire company, and we are so excited they chose to locate one of the two right here in Grinnell. Once the new center is completely up and running, they will have 1,000 employees here in Grinnell out of 20,000 total employees worldwide. Grinnell is the only community that has both a Jeld-Wen doors plant and a Jeld-Wen windows plant, and now only one of two communities to have a primary Customer Support Center.
